Pursuing Your Career as a Technical Writer

In the recent years a lot of evolution has taken place in all the walks of life, be it medical, astronomy, agriculture and so on. Computer science field also emerged a lot. In fact it becomes backbone of running the business in all the walks of life.

A lot of us opted for this (computer sciences) field of study considering the diverse opportunities it offers for the career building.

However, once we enter into it we find out that it is not that easy to pursue the career in this field because not everyone possesses the ability of programming and apparently there is no career in the software industry if one can't program.

A part from programming we might find a career as a Quality Assurance engineer or as Data Base engineer.

On the other hand if you don't have interest in the QA or DB as well, your career is at stake with the computer sciences background.

For all those who are or have been through this anxiety of being no where and do not find themselves to end up with any job in the software industry, I have some help for you people.

 Technical writing can be the answer to all your worries. As the name suggests this field is related to the documentation. It is not merely related to software industry it has wide range of applicability such as instruction guides with the machineries and so on.

However, we would focus only on the software industry.

 Documentation is an important phase of software development life cycle. And almost all the SDLC explains the need of documentation and involves it at different stages of the software development.

A few years back the software houses feel the need of hiring a writer. But now there is an essential emerging need of it because as the industry matures, and the need for certifications and achieving standards is evolved, it is a must to contemplate all the rules and standards. To have the documentation done of all the phase from requirement gathering to development is necessary to accomplish this purpose of achieving a standard.

The technical writer is involved from the initial stages when the requirements are gathered from the client to the documentation of the user guides, training materials (which are given to the client as end product after the development of application).

If you want to engage in the technical writer career, you should at least possess the following abilities:

• You should have strong analytical skills


• Be exponent in extracting information from various sources


• Competent enough to understand the end user and document accordingly


• To communicate/ interact at ease

Lastly make it realize to others as well yourself that you as technical writer are fundamental to the company.
