Technical Writing California

Colleges reccommended for an aspiring graphic novelist?

i want to illustrate and hopefully write my own comic books, but i'm having trouble finding a college that offers drawing, though i haven't looked super hard...i'm not sure exactly what the technical term for one would be...

does anybody know where in california they offer something that would be associated with at least the drawing part of illustrating comics?

i'd like to start out as an artist as well...but with a graphic novelish style...

Hmmm...
If you are hoping to focus your energy on art (and do it as a career), I suggest you try looking at art schools first. To develop your graphic novel skills, you should get help in every part of comic making--basic drawing, design, concept/story and color. Most art schools offer all of these elements in their curriculums.

Schools with great reputations on the west coast:

*Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA-- www.AcademyArt.edu

*San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA--
www.sfai.edu

There are also great schools on the east coast you might look into if you are feeling adventurous:

*Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY
www.pratt.edu

*Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI
www.risd.edu

I CAN PERSONALLY VOUCH FOR:
The Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD)
www.mica.edu (I graduated from there in 07)
This school has a VERY strong illustration department, with incredible classes for Sequential Art (aka: graphic novels and comics). The instructors are all professionals in the fields they teach, so you KNOW you are getting a dose of the real world when you are in class. Some of the teachers in the illustration dept. you may want to look up include: Brian Ralph, Dan Krall, Jose Villarrubia and Whitney Sherman. You also get a very good foundation in basic drawing, painting and digital media.

Know that art school can be too much art for some people and that's okay. There are other academic schools with solid art classes. I am simply giving you the most obvious places to start your search.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH! ***If you have anymore questions or want feedback on your portfolio, go ahead and e-mail me!: jrose_art@hotmail.com or through my website: www.defyingravity.com
