Technical Writing Internship

Is this a good back-up plan? Unsure about my College major?

I'm about to start my Sophomore year of College very soon, but I'm worried that I won't be able to find a good paying job considering the fact I'm currently majoring in English. My school does not offer a Liberal Arts Degree.

I wanted to become a Technical Writer in order to be able to support myself, however, I'm thinking of possibly going to Vocational School and learning a trade, such as plumbing because of the uncertainty of the Work world.

I'm not that great in Math or Science, so any options in those areas are already cut out.

I'm planning on taking a Technical Writing course next year, plus an internship to get some experience to add to my portfolio followed by attending a Vocational School just to have a fall back just in case.

Is this a good back-up plan?
@ maggie

I tried Journalism, but after an internship I couldn't stand seeing myself in that area of work. Journalism is something I'm not interested in doing.

It is difficult to make a living with an English degree. I know that is what you really enjoy or have a passion for but unfortunately sometimes we have to be realistic. I enjoy and have passion for music but I am glad I made the right choice of majoring in Business because its very broad. Plumbers make good money but I've heard its hard to get into an apprenticeship position.
