Do you really think an employer will NOT care if you can't spell?
What if the power is off and no battery-powered equipment is available, but you're asked to write a report due in 30 minutes, and there is no spellcheck? What if you give a demanding boss an error-ridden report? Will he or she be impressed? I have a first cousin to whom this really happened, but it was during a job interview. The report was a pre-employment test to see what he could do. He got the job because he knew how to spell and write coherent sentences, and he is a great success in the field of journalism. You would know him if I told you his name.
I used to own a collection agency, and I was forced to ask my applicants to write two paragraphs about why they want to work in this industry.
The only reason I did it was to make sure they could write and spell. And this was in a college town in Missouri.
