Advice for an adult student who is going to college to become a high school teacher?
My dilemma is that I'm not quite sure what path to take.
Just as a little background - I'm currently a copy editor for an environmental consulting firm (started as an Admin 5 yrs ago and moved up). I have a certification in Copyediting and a certification in Technical Writing (UC San Diego) and am fluent in Spanish.
I am currently attending school for my first Bachelors and am entering my junior year...but I'm not sure if I should get a BS in Education or get a Bachelor's in English (the subject I want to teach) and then go for a teaching certification. My adviser recommends going the former route. But others say the latter is the most *efficient* route (and also leaves more possibilities open for supplemental employment opportunities). I'm inclined to go with the latter. But I also don't want to get lost in a sea of other English majors who 'fall back' on teaching.
Anybody have some advice?
If you want to teach English, you should get your degree in English. If you want to teach History, then you should get a degree in History. While you can qualify to teach in a specific subject through exams, school districts tend to favor applicants with a degree in the subject they intend to teach.
