what is stem cell research?!?
i have to write a report onthis & i dont know what this is ?! can someone explain to me, in plain english, what stem cells are? i think its something in unborn babaies that they use for other people, but it kills the babies?! please help ! thanks (=
There are certain cells that are only present in the first trimester of a baby. The baby or zygote is the size of a a grain of rice. And as of now the law says it is legal to use theses cells when a woman decides to have an abortion. However, there are stem cells in the umbilical cord, after a baby is born. Some stem cells are made by taking donated sperm, and donated eggs, and fertilized in a lab.
As for the use of stem cells: Stem cells are cells that are alive, but are missing the element that tells it what to do. The element missing tells the cell to make heart tissue, or lung tissue, bone, liver, kidney. What ever is needed. The idea is to inject stem cells into a damaged part of the body, like the heart, or lung. The cells take on the hearts element, and fixes the heart. Or the lungs element to repair the damaged part of the lung.
They are now using stem cells, mixed with a persons blood, and covering a mold of a bladder, for a person who has a damaged bladder, and it will grow a new one. Stem cells are also used in a kidney transplant. Medicine can now cut a liver in half, and give half to a person who needs it and both are injected with stem cells. In a few months both persons half liver will grow to full size.
