Why is written expression the most difficult of all academic skills to master?

One of the main reasons is that we write as we speak. Therefore if you don't speak correct English you don't write correct English. Also a lot of people have real trouble with grammar and punctuation which can cause problems with your writing. The last issue in MY opinion is that there are a lot of people with undiagnosed dyslexia or who have a mild form of it and therefore have trouble putting their thoughts into words.
But I think that the first reason is probably the most prevalent. It's the one that most of my daughters teachers have given me after ruling out that most of the kids have dyslexia in her school.
