What happens when somebody goes missing/ how to report?

This is for a writing project, not in real life.. but if anybody has any information on what the procedure is when somebody goes missing, it would help me --
you file a missing person's report? how long after the person goes missing do the police consider it a missing person's case? How long before search teams are called? When does it become a case that even requires search teams?

There is no 48 hour rule (the site listed is for Australia and evenit says there is no such rule).
The FBI does not contact you unless it is thought to be a kidnapping, not a missing.
In real life everything depends on circumstqances.
In my jurisdiction, a very large city, if the missing is under 17 yeas and you are the gauardian or parant you can report the child as missing as soon as the child has not shown up to a place they belong. If the child is younger than 12 or if the officer taking the report feels it is needed, officers are mobilized immediatly to invetigate and search. Needed? well lets say the 13 year old runs away every monthor so and usually shows up at home the next day or when they are arrested for shopliffting. Then likley, unless the first officer or his supervisor thinks different, there will be no immediate search but the infromation is passed on to the next watch for a check and to the juvinile division for an investigaotr follw up. In all cases the childs information is entered into NCIC (National Crime Information Computer) so any officer who name checks can see that the child is missing.
For and adult, 17 or over, the question arises, are they missing? An adult in the US need not listen to thier parants and can decide to leave town whenever they want.
If there is anything unsual or circumstances that make the misssing dangerous to themselves then the first officer decides if there needs to be a report. No immediate search is done for an adult unless circumstances point to a need. Everything is individualized but all are run by a superisor for a second opmion. All missings ae entered into NCIC with the reasons as to why they might need help.
Circumstances for immedatiate search include such things as elderly, dementia, any other mental problem etc.
So if a wife is not home when hubby gets there but her personel belonings are gone she is not a missing, she left and no report is made. If she has been suffering with post partum depression, her clothing is in the closet ans she left the baby with a nieghbor, she may be considered a missing person and a search, at lest of her friends and relatives homes, begin.
