Is it too early to write college essays?

I'm a junior in high school and i will apply for college next year. It's May and i want to get ahead in doing college essays because I'm going to be apply for college next year. My question is, does colleges keep the same type of essay students need to write every year or does every year it change to different topics therefore, i can't start on my essay now because when they start to accept applications, i will have to write an essay with a different topic. My college of interest are Rice University, University of St. Thomas (Houston), Cornell University, and Brown University.

It certainly is not too early to begin thinking about essays that will make your applications stand out from the others. One topic that is on many college applications is to discuss a experience or event that has has an important impact on your life and what that has been. It may not be stated like that on every application, but often your can change your essay around to make it fit a number of different topics. This essay is usually 250 to 500 words. Many applications also have a short essay which is 150 words and it is about one of your extra curricular activities, community service, etc. that has been most important to you. Stay away from common subjects that include athletics, divorce, death, etc. and go for the more unique. Most essays require a number of drafts to get them right.
