But can any lessons be learned online?  Can you learn court reporting online?

Most of the classes are academic in nature and are restricted to learning facts and figures. But, court reporting is equal parts in academic and physical. Learning Court reporting will appear to be a confront at first. But, everybody needs to start from the basics. Every student should be familiar with the language of stenography, called "theory”. Theory is the foundation upon which everything else is based. A book guides you in a classroom setting and you would have to follow daily lessons. Even in court reporting the idea is the same. It is identical to learning foreign language and you don’t need physical classroom to do that do you?

The physical aspect of court reporting relates to finger dexterity and body positioning. They are unique in some ways but are universal in another. The finger dexterity is identical to playing piano. Similar is the case for body postures. Only difference is that the width of the steno keyword is shorter than piano.

Just like piano uses scales to warm up the fingers and increase finger dexterity and keyboard recognition, steno finger drills helps to add finger dexterity. Finger drills when done correctly; relay common finger combinations and patterns to the brain, creating muscle memory. Increased muscle memory in turn shrinks writing hesitations, thus increasing writing speed overall.

Due to poor posture while writing, carpal tunnel syndrome is caused, which is also regarded as the common court reporting related injury. This is the physical aspect of it and it can be learnt very easily. Due to evolvement of video sharing websites like YouTube and Metacafe, most online training programs teach student physical lessons along with video demonstration, rather just words, which can be misinterpreted frequently.

After carrying out the theory and the physical aspects of court reporting, it becomes a matter of building fast writing speed. This is the part where court reporting online can excel over a traditional campus program. Good Online court reporting program can give you the feedback and instructions that can help you to write at speeds of over 225 words per minute.
