How do I write a good cover letter for a reporting job?

I am going crazy trying to write a cover letter for my first reporting job. Is it really a good idea to stray from the standard format and do something more creative? The objective comes at the end in my version. Help.

Write it like the front page of a newspaper. Complete with headlines and articles each summarizing your education, work experience, activities, etc.
