Forensic Report Writing

Legality of used hard drive analysis?

I'm a Computer Forensics student (in the UK), and for a small project I plan to analyse a used laptop. My girlfriends father found it as he works for the council and he found it disposed of in a bin. I'm just wondering how legal it is to analyse this laptops hard drive, and write a small report on it (keeping the owners details anonymous)?

Thanks

Tricky. Guess you wouldn't know till someone tries to sue you. Its subjective, depending on which act they try to charge you under. Even then, lawyers would battle it out to see if you really did invade someone's privacy. or not.

Most probably not anyhow. unless the information in the laptop belongs to a big company. I would think its a stolen laptop which thieves threw away though. Be careful ;)
