Technical Writing And Communication

technical writing and communication_2"technical writing and communication"
Can you answer these interview questions if you are working in a job related to human resources?

This is for my technical writing class. Thanks!

1. brief summary of your education, preparation, and professional accomplishments.
2. what do you use in the production of your writing (style guides, advice, etc)
3.How important is clear writing in your profession? Examples of this importance?
4. How can clear communication lead to advancement in your profession?
5. How much time do you spend writing? Does this vary? Why?
6. Where does most of your writing take place?
7. Who reads your writing?
8. Would you please describe a few of the documents common to your profession?

B.S., Sociology + ongoing HR update classes

I tend to write as I would talk. Of course, I reread documents for typos, "tone", etc.

Clear writing is extraordinarily important. You can learn it all, but if you cannot put it into coherent, compelling, intelligent words, you are lost.

Time writing depends on the assignments I am working. The writing portion of my job is most dominant when I am documenting investigations.

I'm not sure what you mean by this question. I am on my computer, versus writing in longhand. I am in my home office, if you mean where am I physically.

My clients read my writing. Attorneys read my writing.

I write termination documents, investigation documents, data documents (such as providing compensation data from surveys, etc.). I write emails.

Writing Essays

Is the ipad good for writing essays?

I am going to get a laptop for 9th grade because i write a lot of essays in English. I was thinking about the Ipad because I thought it would be more fun and it is a reasonable price. The only 2 reasons i might decide against it is because of the lack of a usb port, and the virtual keyboard. If there is anyone that has one,any information would be helpful. Thanks.

The keyboard actually works fine as does the Pages application. What really makes the iPad rock is the battery life (and the ability to play movies/music.

Here is a review by a professional writer who is now using the iPad for all writing.

Technical Writing Style Guides

technical writing style guides"technical writing style guides"

MLA Writing Style vs APA Writing Style

Quotes are checked, sources verified, word limit exceeded, then, one comes to a screeching halt, "Papers should be formatted according to the MLA or APA style". And so begins a frenzied computer research on the two writing styles.

MLA writing style

The MLA (Modern Language Association) requires that specific rules be followed for formatting manuscripts. It provides writers with a proper system to cite references, the usage of which enhances the writer's credibility by listing outside sources in order to give recognition where it is due. One advantage of the MLA format is that it provides the user protection from possible accusation of plagiarism.

General Guidelines for MLA writing style

When preparing a paper using the MLA writing style, general format guidelines must be adhered to as well as the technical rules of citation and bibliography.

  • Assignments are to be typed on pages no larger that 8.5 x 11, double spaced, with either Times New Roman font, or Courier.

  • One space must be inserted between all punctuation marks.

  • Margins must be set to one inch on all sides of the paper.

  • All paragraphs must be indented one inch (one tab) from the left margin of the page.

  • Headers must be inserted on each page in the upper right hand corner displaying the page numbers of the essay consecutively (some instructors will ask that a student's last name follow the page number on each page).

  • If endnotes are included in your work, they must be placed on the last page, right before your works cited page.

For a more detailed look at the rules regarding end notes, in-text citations or works cited (multiple authors, electronic sources, periodicals, etc.), there are resources available online and in print that will aid you with this writing style. Some excellent print titles for reference material are: MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (6th edition), and MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (2nd edition). For those who have internet access, all MLA writing style rules can be found on a site built by the people at Owl at Purdue.

At all times, it is equally important to strictly follow your professor's instructions on the use of long titles, the need to emphasize with underlines or italics and other personal choices. Careful attention must be paid to every detail so as to prevent loss of marks in the grading process.

APA writing style

APA (American Psychological Association) is a writing style that is generally used within the realm of the social sciences. As in the case of the MLA writing style, the APA has a list of general format guidelines as well as a list of rules pertaining to paragraph structure.

General Guidelines for APA writing style

All essays written in the APA writing style should be structured in accordance to the following guidelines:

  • Assignments must be typed double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 inch pages.

  • The title page must include bylines, titles, or running headers.

  • Page numbers must be included (similar to MLA) followed by 5 spaces, then an abridged version (2 words) of the paper's title.

  • Some instructors require students to prepare an abstract which is a 75 to 100 word overview of the chosen topic highlighting the major points of discussion in the paper. It must be set up on its own page with the word "Abstract"centered at the top of the page, and placed right after the title page.

  • Headings are not specifically necessary but can be helpful in navigating through a paper. Every word of the heading must be capitalized with the exception of articles such as 'the', 'a', and 'an', and certain conjunctions such as 'and', and 'but'.

  • Visuals such as tables and figures including graphs, charts, and drawings may be included; however, each must be labeled with an Arabic numeral i.e. Table 1, Table 2, etc.. Titles must be flush left, each inserted illustration must include its source.

  • Lists of all references must be included on its own page at the end of your written work. Each reference should be centered, starting at the top of the page (also double spaced) and listed in alphabetical order according to the authors last name, editor, or by the title of the work (excluding the words A, An, and The)

For a more detailed look at the rules of the APA writing style regarding references, in text citations, and footnotes or endnotes, please see Owl at Purdue.

writing service"writing service"

Article Writing Service - What services does your company do not write for you?

If you plan on hiring a service of writing the article to create unique content for your website, blog, or to place on various article directories, you need to be assured of quality. Not every article written will be able to provide service with high quality item you need. The ability to create unique content that is both fascinating and keyword dense is to hire a service professional article writing.

High Quality

The most important aspect of a quality article writing service is the quality of their work. Always ask for samples of work for a future article writing service. Do not allow to send you a pre-written paper on a topic of your choice. You may have to pay for a couple of sample articles, if you want to test their ability, but a quality article writing service to demonstrate her samples. If you find a service of writing the article that wants you to take your ability in faith, without any guarantee of the quality of their work, then you must follow in their search for an article written in another place of employment.

When you are checking the work of a prospective service writing articles, you should evaluate on the basis of spelling, punctuation, grammar and content. Content should be unique and not copied from elsewhere on the Internet, and should be attractive and interesting too. A quality article writing service will be able to meet all these aspects. If they fall short of either of them, and then continue their search for an article writing service.

The Delivery

One of the most important after the quality of the articles written by you for an article writing service is the ability to article writing service to deliver your items before the deadline. This can be very important if you have hired an article writing service to write daily content for your blog or website. If the service article writing is late, even for an hour in the delivery of your content for you, you can put in the position of losing its own term and irritating followers. To be realistic, the delivery end can and does happen with all the services of article writing, but should be a rare exception, not the rule for article writing service you choose.

Guarantees

Another hallmark of a high quality article writing service is the added value of collateral. If an article writing service thinks highly of themselves, then they should offer an incentive, if they miss a deadline or give inaccurate work. Most article writing service companies on the Internet offer some form of compensation if he does not offer a high quality content as requested. Some service companies writing the article offer a discount on future missions and others do not charge for late delivery of work.

Election of an article writing service to create content for you is a smart choice, just make sure you simply do not choose article writing service that offers the lowest cost, because at some point you may get what you pay.

Essay Writing Uk

Beware Of Custom Essay Writing Companies

If you are considering buying an essay online here are some things that you should consider first:-

1. Cheap Prices for Essays

Have you ever asked yourself why the prices might be cheap?

Essay writing companies love you to believe that they are using the highest quality academic writers to write your essay, but in reality they are using cheap labour from third world countries where English is a second language.   Consequently, you receive a low quality essay for the price and the English grammar will be of a low grade too, something that your lecturer will pick up on straight away after you submit your work.

2. Your Essay won't be Original

Too often or not essay writing companies who are writing your essays cheaply are either often changing papers slightly or sending you an essay that has already been written for other clients.  The problem with this is that the paper that they are copying doesn't answer your essay question and there is a huge risk of plagiarism happening.

UK universities use sophisticated software called ‘Turnitin' to detect plagiarism.   The software works by comparing your written essay against a bank of previously submitted essays and academic work submitted by other university students.

It will also compare your work against academic sources such as published journals, books and the internet.  Such is the power of this piece of software; it can sometimes take up to 48 hours to check your essay for plagiarism.  Once plagiarism has been detected, a university can take a range of disciplinary action against the student.  This can include having marks from your essay deducted, totally failing your essay or even being expelled from university.

So before you buy an essay from an online essay company, you should ask the following questions from the essay company first:-

1. Ask what their payment methods are?   Do they have a company bank account within the UK, where you can transfer the funds to?

Do not simply trust them just because they use a payment processor like PayPal or 2 Checkout (2CO) that they are not based in a third world country.

2. Ask them for a correspondence and office address.

You should be given a legitimate business address in the United Kingdom, if they fail to provide this, do not use them.

3. Ask for specific company details of the company.

If the company is registered within the United Kingdom, it will be registered with Companies House (which is the UK Government's official register of companies).   So ask for a company number and check it on company's house website.

4. Ask for samples of previous work that they have completed for other clients.

This way you can see the quality of the work that they produce.

Technical Writing Grammar

Could you help me proofread? It's only 3 sentences.?

Ok, here it is. I looked over it, and I thought it was alright as for spelling and grammar. But my technical writing teacher Is really tough on correct punctuation, spelling, word usage, etc. I don't get points for this until I have everything 100% correct. Thanks in advance to anyone that helps:)

"the subject of my paragraph is the Pythagorean theorem. I wrote each sentence so it could appeal to kids aged fourteen to fifteen years old, who don't quite understand what the Pythagorean Theorem is. I used words that most fourteen to fifteen year olds should understand."

Parts Of Report Writing

Interview question - report writing?

Going for an interview tomorrow and part of the job will include writing accurate reports for both staff and clients. I know it's going to be included in the questioning but I've never really had to do it before. What else can I say in place of writing an internal report/external report for clients or internal and external communications when I don't really do this. What are other examples I can use for 'accurate reporting' or 'internal and/or external communications' that I can use in place of this? I currently work as an office administrator. All advice appreciated - no trolls please.

Thanks

You want to play on how you can change your writing style depending on the audience or reader. That will want they want to hear.

Also you want to say how you are speedy, accurate, concise and succinct

Good luck!

Business Correspondence And Report Writing

Persuasive Business Writing: 5 Step Formula for Success

Business needs to learn the art of persuasion in writing.  Imagine getting to work on a Monday morning after a long weekend.  You had to do your spring cleanup on the yard, pick your sister up at the airport, and to top it all off the baseball game you wanted to watch was blacked out in your area since it was sold out.  You're looking at a full work week and you want to get off to a good start.  Your in-box is stuffed to the gills, so you begin to wade through it to find what the keepers are.  Someone has written you a letter that begins like this:

"Dear Sir or Madam:  I appreciate the fact that you must have a full business calendar.  If I could have but a few moments…"  This one goes in the circular file as you move on to the next piece of potential trash.

Here's a question for you.  How would you like the author of that last letter to have been you?  It could be.  Your goal is to make your business writing come alive or, at a minimum, avoid boring him to sleep.  If you have a message, you want it to get read.

A few months back this column highlighted some of the main situations in small business today that call for writing as opposed to the spoken word.  Today I'm going to give you a simple formula for 90% of business writing.  You see, in almost all business writing we want something, and the recipient of our correspondence may be in a position to do something about it, or at least react to it.  The format of persuasive writing, then, is applicable for many of the situations you will face.  Different twists can be made on this basic format whether writing a sales proposal, a report, or a follow-up letter.

The Hook

The very first sentence of any business correspondence, just like the first sentence of a speech, must be your best.  It must hook the reader so he wants to read on.  Attention spans are getting shorter and shorter, so within ten seconds you'd better have ‘em.  Use a startling fact like, "Did you know that an Inc. Magazine survey found that the average business owner spends 35% of her time in wasteful meetings?"  This will grab the reader, especially if he identifies with it.  Your job is to arouse interest.

There are other methods as well.  You can make use of a quote from a respected authority, say something humorous (be very careful here!), or offer something of value to the reader so he'll continue.  In essence, bribe him.  A great technique is to ask a pain-inducing question, such as "Is limited cash flow keeping you from growing your business?"  Your goal is to set up a problem, a problem that, of course, you can help solve.

The Message

Tell the reader what you want in clear, concise terms.  State the best possible outcome for the company from the reader's perspective.  Give a prelude to how you will make your case in the remainder of the correspondence.  If you have overall recommendations, here is where to state them.  Don't make the reader wade through the entire report, letter, or request to find out what your suggestions are.  Put the best stuff first, right after your attention-grabbing hook.

The Support

This section of all business writing is often called the body.  This is where you provide data and analysis that makes your point for you.    If a chart helps, throw it in.  Use expert testimony that supports your point of view.  Your objective here is to convince the reader, the person whom you want to influence, that your recommendation or what you want is best for the company.

The body is also where you provide the details—the plan.  This provides indirect support for your position, because you actually have a plan!  In the body of your writing, make sure that you use facts, not opinions.  Don't make any unsupported assertions.  Use concrete, understandable language.  Remember, KISS—Keep It Simple…Susie

If you want to make your business writing easy to read, use bold headings for each section.  Headings call attention to each section so that your reader can go right to where he wants in your document.  This is particularly true in the support section, which is the longest section in most business writing.  You may have sections on Budget, Cost/Benefit Analysis, and Staffing.  They all have different information, so use headings to separate the information and make a happy reader.

Ask For It

Never assume that the reader, or listener when you're giving a speech, automatically knows what you want her to do with your information.  After you've proved your point, ask for it!  Tell her specifically what you want her to do now.  Be clear and specific.  "Please consider the plan that I have outlined herein" sucks.  The reader can consider it and throw it in the round file.  Here's a better version:  "I need you to approve the budget for this project by next Tuesday."

WIIFM

You may recognize this acronym stands for "What's In It For Me?"  If you want your reader to take action, any action, there must be a compelling reason to do so that goes beyond your hope that he's a nice guy.  To piggy back onto my "Ask for it" example, you can use, "Failure to act now will cost our company $10,000 a month."  That one is using negative reinforcement, but you can just as easily turn it around with, "You'll be the man responsible for saving the company $10,000 a month, and bonuses are delivered at the end of the quarter."  If you were approving whatever project we're talking about here, would these reasons be important to you?

There are plenty of ways to write effectively for business.  This article gives you a recipe that can't miss when writing to persuade your reader, assuming your information is valid.  If your the boss writing a corporate policy memo or a design engineer trying to get capital for the next project, remember--hook him, tell him what you want, back it up, ask for it, and give him a reason to act, and you'll end up getting more of what you want.

can anyone please giv me an opening paragraph to a creative writing essay called the hero!?

its for english and i need a good beginning so i can get the vibe of what am doin!

Michael stud there, hunched beside an oak tree staring at the gold leaf writing on the carved stone, his mind trying desperately not to think back of the memories. The memories he thought, the laughter, the adventure, the first time they met - yes that cold winter in Newcastle city centre helping her up after a nasty fall from the steps of Greys Monument. Then the last memory the nurse setting up the morphine drip, the family gathered around all sorrowful, her last facial expression aimed towards him a smile. Michael then placed some poppies, her favourite onto the bottom of the tomb-stone, reading it as he lay praying on her 3rd anniversary " Kate Ampleforth 12/09/1976 - 19/12/2010 'Loving Wife and Mother' 'The light shines in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it' " His mobile rang much to Michaels relief, he needed to be occupied. These last few years Michael concentrated on his career in the armed service, he never properly grieved and he knew it! As a Navel Officer Michael rose through the ranks and was on call today. The phone call was his Admiral "Commander Ampleforth report to Hartlepool Docks, ASAP, Your to command HMS Northumbria, report to my room at 20:15pm! Lets just say North Korea has done something silly" Michael didn't get a chance to exchange pleasantries, as he hurried to his car he had one glance back at the resting place of his beloved, "It should have been me" he thought. ..............

Writing Is Fun and Easy

Brought to you by:

http://www.webbzwriting.com

http://webbzwriting.blogspot.com/

When I was establishing my consultants practice in 1990 I set about creating a book. The book was aimed at helping people to progress in their careers and shows how to assess yourself, prepare an interview winning resume', market yourself and win the job at interviews, plus other real life tips.

Anyway I enjoyed the writing process, thought the book was good and sold a few copies. The effort of writing the book was not rewarded by the number of copies sold. I did not really have a low cost route to market.

In building my web site and writing a weekly newsletter I have realised that I do enjoy writing and drawing on my experiences. So recently I have been thinking of writing another book for sale on the internet.

Guess what? I got my original book out, re-read it and I am editing it as my next internet publication. The point of this article is to tell you what I realised when I read my ‘masterpiece'.

I had been living in the corporate world and the book was written in corporate style. Formal, the grammar was convoluted, too many long words. It was not easy to read and I did not like the style. The content is excellent but I did not like how the book was written.

Bearing in mind when I originally wrote it 15 years ago I read and re-read it in an effort to do a good job. That I now do not like the writing style came as a shock. Which shows that our skills and perceptions are changing all of the time and no matter how good we think we are at any one thing we can always do better.

If you've got anything that you created a while back it may be worth having another look at it. Your style may have changed and you may be able to improve it.

My son writes for his living and he has experienced the same with some of his early writing.

By writing for the web my style has changed, hopefully to a more readable form because I still like writing.

Tip: learn from the mistakes of others, you can't live long enough to make them all yourself.

what are some other words i can use to start paragraphs.....linking words...
such as moreover and furthermore

not sure what kind of essay you are writing but when i write essays i was taught that those words arent necessary. It is more important to start your paragraph with a sentence about what that paragraph is about. if you need to continue the one argument then you use linking words.

An assignment to write a 5 paragraph essay may seem challenging at first, but when broken down into pieces, it is much easier and should be fun and enjoyable. Otherwise, the outcome may be not be what you, your teacher or your parents desired, such as poor grades, anxiety and frustration. Listed here are 4 great tips on how to organize and write a 5 paragraph essays in less than 30 minutes.

1. Essay structure

It is important to have the correct structure for your essay to help organize your thoughts and ideas, and because doing so helps prevent writing off topic or wasting time. Failing to have the correct essay structure can certainly cause you confusion and will make the process seem more difficult. The 5 paragraph structure consists of an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion.

2. Introduction

The introduction must tell your reader about the topic, but it must also have an attention grabbing sentence, or hook, to get the reader interested. This is usually about something difficult or challenging. Once you form the attention grabbing sentence, then you are ready for your thesis sentence, which simply states what you are about to tell your reader. The thesis sentence is the last sentence in the introduction. Now you will want to think of 3 point, ideas or experiences related to your thesis statement.

3. Body Paragraphs

Next, when writing a 5 paragraph essay, you must have three (3) paragraphs in the body of the essay. In each paragraph explain in detail one of the three ideas or experiences related to your thesis statement. This structure helps keep the essay on topic and interesting for your reader.

4. Conclusion

The conclusion is the simplest paragraph when writing a 5 paragraph essay. The last sentence in your introduction paragraph becomes the first sentence in your conclusion paragraph. The next sentence includes your three points or ideas. Finally, you have the concluding sentence that wraps is all up.

Writing For University

what is the point in writing university texts that don't make any sense for undergrad students?

Collecting royalties. I do not really believe that they write them with malice. "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence, as incompetence is far more common than malice".

It is a real problem that some people who understand a subject matter very well cannot see how to explain it to those who do not.

I used to run part of a service lab. On occasion some researcher would bring down a sample to have us hydrogenate it [or whatever], said sample having taken months to make, and being therefore of great value.
I would write up the experimental protocol, then ask the secretary to read it and answer questions about what should be done in case of various experimental responses. I chose her because she knew nothing about what was to be done; if she could understand it, then my instructions were sufficiently clear. If not, she would at least help me see where I needed to rewrite the instructions. However, once I rewrote them, then I had to get someone else to read them, as the secretary now knew about the procedure, ie, was not [in the parlance] "naive" and so any response from her might be misleading, as she had figured out from the prior edition.
I wish more writers of texts and other instructions would do this sort of thing.

English Essay Writing

english essay writing"english essay writing"
Im currently writing an extended essay in ib in english a1 and need some help!?

i started writing my extended essay in english about the harry potter series. its due anytime next month but i really need tips on a good thesis and question to investigate...i have about 700 words till now but thats just introducing a the topic...i really neeed ur help guyz any help wil be really appreaciated.

Well I just had a discussion with my EE advisor today and she warned me to best not to do my EE on the harry potter series, any of the fan-fiction works because IB will consider them as middle-school literature and they won't be evaluating your paper very kindly. However, if it's too late to change your mind and switch to something else then I guess you could explore the idea of fantasy/magical elements. Like magic realism - research more about that. Or you could take harry potter and compare it with another magic/fantasy modern and more classic book. I'm not sure which books but they're all lot.

Good luck!
