Technical Writing - An Elite Technical Publication - "Pictures of the Future" by Siemens
POF is published by the Marketing Communications department of Siemens' Corporate R&D division. That explains its forward-looking information-packed content. "If any sentence or word does not convey any significant information, I take it out," said Mr. Pease, Editor in Chief of POF.
The magazine's web site describes itself as follows: "Which Technologies will shape our lives in ten to twenty years? The magazine "Pictures of the Future" reports twice a year on major technology trends and looks at work in progress in the Siemens laboratories. It includes future scenarios, features and reports on corresponding R&D activities at Siemens and interviews with international experts."
As someone who has published quite a few periodicals in the past, I am particularly appreciative of the level of excellence reached by Mr. Pease and his team since I'm painfully aware of the things that can go wrote in publishing such a high-exposure magazine for such an international business leader.
When you publish a magazine like POF, with an average circulation of 100,000 and an average of 30 articles in every 100-page-plus issue, you know the "eyes of the world" are on you. "90% of our readers are form outside the company," Pease told the STC-DC banquet audience. So when I said that the "eyes of the world" would be on such a publication, I believe I wasn't too far off from the truth.
Let's remember that POF is published on behalf of a R&D department that spends 3.4 Billion Euros a year for 8,000 inventions (or 21 inventions EVERY day!), developed in 150 corporate locations around the world. It's a great publishing and communication responsibility that Pease and his team discharged very well indeed.
