Why Communications Skills Are Important To A Sales Career by Vincent Rogers
If you are looking for a career in sales, your ability to communicate is going to be your most useful tool. A sales person who cannot establish rapport with a customer within the first seconds of greeting them has little chance of making a sale. Customers buy from sales personnel who have the ability to make them comfortable and make them feel like they matter as a person not just as someone who makes money for the business the salesperson is working for.
In order to make your customer feel comfortable and trust you, a salesperson has to be able to communicate in a few simple words and an enthusiastic voice. Greeting your customer by name will make them feel special and gives them the feeling that you care about them, their needs and their wants. When you establish that kind of rapport with your customers, they are more willing to purchase from you because they trust you.
While in face to face sales, a customer can pick up whether you care or not from non verbal as well as verbal cues; the art of communicating is still important. This art is even more important to people in telesales. Not only do you have your voice and your words to establish a rapport with your potential customer but, chances are that this customer is a complete stranger who may not be too thrilled about receiving your call to begin with. This means, that you may only have seconds to establish enough rapport with the person you are calling to convince them to hear you out. You then have to use all the communication skills at your disposal to convince them the product you are selling will somehow enhance their life by either making it simpler, more convenient or more fun.
Sales people who have mastered the communication skills are not only an asset to the company, but experience less stress and frustration from their jobs then people who have not mastered these skills. While some of these communication skills may come naturally, most have been learned.
If you would like to start a job in sales you can increase your chances of being hired and of being successful by working on your communication skills. There are a variety of ways you can increase these skills. You can take classes and seminars, practice public speaking, and even watch those who are successful communicators at work. Then practice those skills on family members, friends and complete strangers as often as possible. By working to increase your communication skills you are honing the most important skill necessary to a career in sales.
Surprisingly learning to communicate better for your career may have the added benefit of forming stronger bonds with family members and friends as well. So go ahead, take that communication class, attend that seminar and provide yourself with the skills that will make you successful at your job and in life.
