USA Holiday Travel Destinations to Enjoy Holidays

As a travel writer and editor, I'm often asked to provide top five and top ten lists about my favorite places and destinations. I've found that you can spend hours adding and removing names, yet your first take usually hits the bullseye. When I thought about the top five tourist attractions in the USA, I quickly wrote down five places. Then I spent a few hours adding, changing, revising, yet in the end, those initial instinctive responses proved best. In no particular order, here they are:

1. Las Vegas

A tourist attraction and city all in one. Just the hotels themselves are staggering in their architecture, design and opulence. Stay in Paris France, an Egyptian Pyramid, Ancient Rome, Venice Italy, and so on. The shows, restaurants, stores, anything you could want is right here. There's also something for every budget. You can come and spend $500. for a whole weekend at Harrahs or spend $500. for a single Wagyu Kobe beef hamburger at a fancy restaurant like Daniel at The Venetian. You could also come for a month and see a different, superstar-level show every night without repeating once.

2. New York

Another city that qualifies as a tourist attraction, the biggest city in the world offers something for everyone. Historic monuments like the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, as well as a selection of museums that can't be duplicated anywhere. The world's best of everything, from stores to restaurants. And neighborhoods to fit every taste, from the hip Village to professional mid-town to the fancy Upper East Side. The city has a power, size and beauty the can only be experienced live, on street level.

3. Walt Disney World

A true resort destination, Walt Disney took what he learned from Disneyland and implemented it here outside Orlando, Florida. Disney does it right, we've been fans since we were kids and went here in the 1970's. Disneyland is a great place and has finally seen some quality development around it through Destination Disney and California Adventure, but the park in Florida offers much more.

4. Grand Canyon

A true natural wonder, photos and video do not do this site justice. Nothing can replace that first feeling of walking up to the edge for the first time and gazing across the space, and thinking, "Wow, thats big." The area has also been well protected from over development and the Grand Canyon site itself retains a rustic charm.

5. Honolulu, Hawaii

Its a tropical paradise and its in the USA. Even touristy Honolulu, with its hotels and over-development, retains a tropical beauty, allowing even package tourists to experience Aloha style, grace and comfort. The beaches are wonderful and first time visitors are often startled as to how picture-postcard-perfect the whole Waikiki Beach scene appears in person.

Its a solid list. Of course, if you have to factor in cost of travel, or geographic location, or weather, the list changes. But start with these top five and you can't go wrong.
