What would be a good major for an aspiring author?
I am currently working on what I want to major in at college (I'm still in high school at the moment). I want to be a fiction writer more than anything, but I have heard that majoring in English brings a lot of technical information about writing that many authors don't use later on.
Does anyone have any advice on a different major that might work better to my advantage as an aspiring author, and maybe give me a few more job opportunities when I graduate? I hate the idea of being stuck in some boring office job while I try to get published.
I was thinking about psychology or sociology, because I love to learn about people. I'm also into drawing, singing, history, horseback riding, and animals in general, if that helps with suggestions. Any advice would be deeply appreciated. Thank you :-)
You should minor in something that will help your writing career (phsychology, english -which is somewhat helpful I assure you, regardless of how much it's used literally) and focus on majoring on another career you'd enjoy.
It's not that I doubt your writing capabilities, but there is not as big a promise of full time income for authors. It's like acting, even if your really good, there's a lot of luck involved in making the big time. So find another job you also enjoy that could perhaps even aid your novel writing.
Teaching is a good one that gives you most of the summer off for writing! Or the veterinary business since you like animals is also a full time with spare time to write.
