When doing research, how do you include the source (i.e. give them credit) in the paper you're writing?

I am so confused. I am writing a Cause/Effect paper for English class. The topic of my paper is parental substance abuse and its effect on children (as children and adults). I found a couple of internet sources that I'd like to use but I don't know how to incorporate them into my paper. See below for an example:

John Doe went to the mall this past weekend to observe behaviors amongst youth. According to his report, he noticed 65% of all youth shoplift at some point in their lives ( ) <<<< how do I give John Doe credit in the parenthesis? Let's say he wrote an article on his website www.johndoe.com and the article is dated May 5, 2005.

Also, how do you use quotations and give your source credit in your paper? For instance:

"Approximately 65% of all youth shoplift at some point in their lives", says John Doe of John Doe.com ( ) <<<< again, how do I reference that?

Always check with your teacher though before you turn it in because there and several different standard citation methods. Your teacher may be expecting you to adhere to a specific style guide.
