What is a good 2008 event of societal/political importance I could write a report on?

I need to find a good event of societal/political importance that happened this year. Not anything of entertainment purposes. Can anyone help? Would the olympics be considered one?

The Olympics can be considered an important societal and political event. In fact, I think it would be the best one to write a report on, considering the protests.
