What do schools want me to supply as a writing sample?

I am applying to grad school, and one of the schools suggested that I attatch a writing sample in addition to my letter of intent.

I understand submitting a letter of intent, but what do they want as a writing sample?.... a research paper, or report I wrote from any class?

If you are applying to Grad School, they will want a writing sample in your declared major. For example, if you are getting a Master's degree in English, then you should submit a writing sample of a very good English paper that you wrote from a class. The writing sample is a way of Grad Schools seeing how well you can write and is a part of their decision making process on whether to accept you or not. Good Luck.
