How To Write Turabian Style Papers

There are numerous writing exercises that are carried out in the academic realm and most students find that they have to continuously engage in various writing exercises. These include essays, term papers, research papers, review papers and reports-just to mention but a few. These academic papers are also written in different academic writing styles which are designated depending on the type of profession under which the writing is taking place. These designated styles include Turabian writing style, Chicago writing style, Harvard writing style, APA and MLA writing styles-just to mention but a few. On interest in this particular case are the Turabian style papers.

The Turabian style was created by Kate Turabian and was published by Chicago University. It is a derivative of the Chicago writing style and is thus greatly similar to the Chicago writing style. The Chicago writing style was meant researchers and academic people that wished to have their Chicago style papers published, and as a result it is a little complex. On the other hand, the Turabian derivative used in writing Turabian style papers was made a little simpler by Kate for the sake of students that did not require their papers to be published. Therefore, Turabian style papers are very similar to Chicago style papers, but with slight variation. Turabian style papers make use of two styles of documenting in-text citations. These include the use author-date parenthetical citations and hyper-text markers incorporated in the in-text citations. However, all these styles need to have a bibliography included. The use of hypertext markers is accompanied by notes that are either placed on the bottom of the pages (foot notes) that they occur or at the end of the document in form of endnotes. The end notes and foot notes represented by the hypertext markers are denoted by Arabic or Roman numerals that show where the in-text citations is supposed to be located. The markers represented by the Arabic or Roman numerals in Turabian style papers are numbered in a sequential manner, which makes it easier for readers of Turabian style papers to trace the references. At times Turabian style papers maintain sequential numbering of markers only within certain sections of the document whereas; others make sequential markers that are sequential throughout the whole document. These numerals correspond to the references they denote at the bottom of the page or the whole document, and they are also incorporated sequentially within all Turabian style papers. The notes provide in-depth information that can allow the readers to effectively trace the sources used in writing the Turabian style papers. These notes show the year the work was published, the author, title, type of source and publisher of the work as well as the edition. Additionally, the information on these notes is replicated on the bibliography list at the end of the whole document. On the other hand, Turabian style papers using author-date citations place these details within the parentheses. The included details are the authors surname and the date of publication of the work used to write the Turabian style papers. The bibliographic list has to be done in an alphabetical order which makes it easy for the readers to trace a source through the use of the surnames of the authors. Notably, Turabian style papers are simpler in form in comparison to the Chicago styled papers from which the style is derived.
