Why do people give nicknames?

I am writing a report on why people give others nicknames. I would LOVE it if you would give me your insight and views on why people give nicknames to others. What do you think? Is it an emotional attachment? or maybe a sign of friendship?

I believe it's a sign of affection. I give nicknames to the people I have the closest relationships with.

That is, of course, not including the mean names some people call others just to be mean. I don't give mean nicknames.

How to answer business mail more aptly?

I usually begin mail with: Thanks for your reply; how are you; Good day etc.What more could be written in the first line of mail?

It would be really nice if someone edit & re-write the following sentence for me.

We have mentioned some products of our choice; we would like you to suggest us some of your best products which would give optimum result in our environment

It's not really appropriate to put phrases like "how are you?" or "good day"into business letters, as these are more personal greetings.

"We would refer you in particular to the undermentioned products and we should be obliged if you might suggest those of your products which would yield the best results within our environment"
