From secretarial to technical IT work - how do I write my CV?
I am changing careers from medical secretarial work to contract IT repair/1st or 2nd line support, mainly because the work is uninspiring and the pay is awful. I've had some IT experience as a secretary, passed a CompTIA A+ certification and currently studying for a CCNA, but the CV I've written is far too vague to be taken seriously by anyone, and as as result no agencies have got back to me.
1) What do I include in my CV? I have written a section on key skills I've learnt pertaining to IT already, and have a list of software packages I've used recently.
2) What is the best way to structure the CV?
3) Do I write a brief summary or go into detail about previous employment? I have been a temp secretary for 4 years and have done virtually the same thing in different places - take calls and type letters. I've done no other jobs.
4) Do I write 'referees available on request'?
5) Do I mention my medical/clerical qualifications I got after school?
Thanks for your help everyone! :)
Mention everything you can but keep it brief. If you're looking at changing careers then I'd add a personal statement saying why you're changing careers and why you're worth it to the employer. Again keep that brief though. 10 lines MAX!
