Where can I go (live/online) to get samples of SR&ED documents?
I am trying to learn the techincal form of how the reports are written and the interviews are performed. Any help would be appreciated.
Examples are almost useless because different reviewers want to see slightly different kinds of reports and records. Always, always, contact CRA and talk to your reviewer before filing so that you don't waste time.
Before you start writing, remember that it is the scientific process itself that counts towards the credit, not the result of that process, and the process must involve some risk/unknowns. So, for example, if you are developing a product, you have to determine what kind of technical risk there is. Then you have to turn your business logic around to write the report: you don't care about the product, you developed the prototype as a platform in order to scientifically investigate the problem of the risks/unknowns so you would know the answer. Everything you did was to investigate and resolve the technical risk.
The biggest mistake people make is to try to adapt marketing documents (which talk about the product is and try to *minimize* any talk about risk) to an SR&ED application (where the product doesn't matter and the risk/unknowns are the only important thing). Always think about risk and the process you took to investigate/eliminate that risk, such as building a prototype to test your technical ideas out. The fact that the prototype led to a product is entirely irrelevant. Keep this in mind, talk to your reviewer and you'll be fine -- the reviewers usually want to help you if you are willing to meet them halfway with the right mindset.
