7 mistakes of web project managers

If you are a company or a project manager, check out these 7 mistakes of web project managers to gain some insight into some things you should avoid when it comes to managing a web project.

Web design and Development involves three levels:

  • Web management
  • interaction design (navigation support, homepage layout, templates, search, etc.)
  • content design (the actual writing on the pages, as well as the design of any other media types used to communicate content as opposed to site interaction)

FACT: users only care about content. The message has to be the message and the medium is not the message. Usability of a website is also extremely important to users. If they can’t figure out how to use your website, then they will leave immediately.

1. Not Understanding the Company’s Goals
This is by far the biggest issue I see when I evaluate a site for SEO and Marketing. It baffles me as to how many websites I see on a daily basis that make we wonder who the target market is. I evaluated an electronics company the other day, and it read like a technical document. By the second page, I was lost. Guess what? Consumers viewing this site are too.

In this day and age, you need a website, to be considered as a professionally run organization. Its fine if you only want to create a virtual business-card site with a small amount of corporate imagery, directions to your offices, corporate affiliations, goals, investment relations, etc. Honestly, this is not the most effective use of the web for your business, as you are not targeting consumers.
Your job as a project manager should always be assisting companies in finding ways in which they can provide legitimate customer value on their site.

2. Designing a site for the company executives and employees
Internally-focused websites sites cause companies to end up with home pages full of useless mission statements, corporate history, the CEO’s CV, etc. While most of this is necessary, make sure it all goes on the “About Us” or “Company Info” page, not the home page. The website should be designed with customers' needs in mind and not to promote or pump-up the company without any regard for the consumer. Building a site for the company executives only serves one target audience: the executives. So make sure you build a website for the people who you want to sell your products or services to. If you want to make the executives happy, then build an Intranet with an internal website dedicated to all things about the company. Intranets are a great way for employees and executives to communicate and work together to accomplish the goals of the company. But the truth is, Consumers WILL NOT buy from you if they do not feel important and respected.

3. Outsourcing certain aspects of the web design project to Multiple Agencies

If you are planning on outsource every Web project to a new agency (or even worse, India), your site will end up looking like a patchwork quilt instead of a simple and clean interface. As with most agencies or outsourced companies, they want to put their own individual stamp of creativity on it. This tends to end up in a huge mess. The goal here is consistency.

Users and Consumers do not like to click on different pages where the design aspect changes from page to page. In their eyes, you have lost your credibility and will most likely lose sales and repeat business. Not only that, if the company plans to use the website to showcase to investors, well, guess what they are going to think also? A website is more than just a calling card, its Y-O-U. With that said, having a mismatched design, only stands to make you look unprofessional.

Use only one agency or design firm to design the site from start to finish. Make sure they have the skills and talent and above all, communication ability to provide the services. Communication breakdowns or no communication are what kills many a web project.

4. Don’t forget about Maintenance and updates
The Internet changes so fast that a major redesign is needed at least once per year simply to avoid a completely outdated look and to accommodate changing user expectations. You will always need to develop and implement fresh content. Using a Content Management System (CMS) is by far the best way to avoid spending a ton on site redesigns. CMS systems are easy to manage and changing the template (face) of the website is relatively easy and cost-effective.

5. Underestimating the need for Marketing when designing a web project
Like I said earlier, designing a site for the executives is a HUGE mistake and if that is the case, you can throw out any marketing strategies you have. Another big thing to remember is building a site without Search Engine Optimization in mind. So if you build an all flash based website, the search crawlers will not be able to read it and index it, and some users (especially those still on dial-up) will not be able to even view your website. Another negative about flash is that the user must have the most current flash player installed in order to view your site properly. If users have to take the time to install software to view your site, most will leave immediately.

The key here is to make a website for the consumer and make it as easy as possible for them to navigate. CMS systems are built with SEO in mind, so check them out. Wordpress currently has a plug in called All-In-One that works great. So does Joomla, which has now incorporated Meta information that you can easily fill out with titles and keywords that are relevant to each page.

Tactful way to say to a colleague, to improve his work ethic.?

Both started at the same company for more than a year. He's my immediate supervisor. If I have concerns or problems re our joint project he's the go to guy. I used to admire his work ethic but not anymore. I cannot always rely on him anymore. I would write in our communication book re concerns, queries re work and 99% of the time he won't give me any replies. I've reminded him in writing to answer my questions but still no reply. I am frustrated and disappointed. My best way to deal with him is to avoid him at work. We only work 1/day a week. I've stop using the communication book, too, mainly because he does not answer them anyway. Went to upper management to report him but nothing really was done. For a week he'll be good but then after that he'll go back to his old ways. What is the best way and tactful way to say to your colleague, to improve your work ethic?

Can you build in a meeting time, or suggest a meeting time after work if that doesnt suit? Maybe your work colleague is overwhelmed and not coping with additional responsibility? At your work place you should have a grievance procedure in place for situations just like these - you have followed the right steps, and gone to management also - procedure demands that if its not resolved to your satisfaction that you take it to the next level - whatever that may be in yr situation - usually it involves bringing in an independent party. Check out what your employers policy is on this, and follow that path

Writing a Science Fair Project Report

One of the final and most important elements of a science fair project is the report. While your presentation board will present the hypothesis, basics of experiment and key results your report will include expand on your hypothesis, include all details of the experiment and all results. In my study for this article I came across a list of questions that your report will revolve around. Again I must give credit to Salvatore Tocci and his book How To Do a Science Fair Project. Here are the questions you must ask:

1.       What problem or question is being investigated?

2.       What background information exists on this topic?

3.       What equipment and materials were used in your experiments?

4.       What procedures were followed to solve the problem or answer the question for this project?

5.       What observations were made during the course of the investigation?

6.       What information and data were recorded?

7.       What conclusions were made regarding the original problem or question?

8.       What suggestions were included for further research work to solve the problem more convincingly or answer the question more thoroughly?

9.       What new problems or questions were uncovered by the project?

10.   What sources were used?

Use these questions to gather the main sources of content for your report. Keep your report clear and concise and make sure that you answer all questions. Science fair judges are more impressed with quality over quantity. Write in a language any person could understand since not everyone that will read your report with be well versed in scientific terminology.

The body of your report should include the following sections: abstract (a brief summary), introduction, explanation of methods, results, conclusions and bibliography (works cited). The abstract is very important due to the fact that it will be the primary section that science fair judges will read thoroughly if not the only one. The abstract should be three to four paragraphs that summarize the main parts and points of the rest of your report. It will actually be easier to write your report, then the abstract rather than the other way around.

The introduction of your report can be viewed as an expanded version of your hypothesis. Add to it what the project attempted to prove and also what variables were used in the experiments. The explanation of your methods should be precise enough that a reader could duplicate your experiment using your report. You will want to explain each step in the experimentation process and may want to use pictures, graphs or charts to help readers understand what you are explaining. The results section will simply be inserting the actual results of your experiment. No interpretation is needed, simply state the facts. You may also include details on failures, errors or unexplained results. The conclusion of your report is the section that includes interpretation of your results. This is where you will determine if your hypothesis was supported or not. The last element is to properly cite all of your sources and references. Be sure to include author names, titles, page numbers and even publishing information (publisher & year).

Management Report Writing

Are Project Management Reports Simply A Way for Project Manager’s to Hide Bad News?

A Project Manager holds a position of great trust. Often the futures of Organisations are entrusted to them, together with large budgets which can be ill afforded. In return, transparent project reporting through Project Management Reports are expected, to emable Business Stakeholders to accurately track progress. But do Organisations always get the real picture?

Now there are correct and incorrect ways to fill in Project Management Reports. Some Project Managers like to fill in the bare minimum of information, whilst others go for incessant detail and write reams. However it doesn’t matter how much is written, so much as what is written.

Where projects are concerned, Organisations need an update on the following:

  • Summary of Progress
  • Milestones
  • Key Issues
  • Risks
  • Dependencies
  • Budget

Now this might appear to be extremely straightforward, but project management is an art, not a science. Sometimes being economical with the truth can be an extremely good idea as it allows time for the issues to be resolved without unnecessarily raising the alarm bells with Business Stakeholders.

The problem is that this often gets taken to extreme lengths by Project Manager’s who are simply after an easy life. With these individuals, being economical with the truth becomes a way of life and soon the problems mount up with the project becoming unachievable, but no-one understanding this until it is too late. After all it is far easier for everyone if Project Management Reports contain only good news to stop Business Stakeholders asking awkward questions.

You might think that this is a far fetched situation, but it is far more common than you may realise. Take the UK’s £234 million public sector C Norris IT System. A recent report by the National Audit Office reported that bad news about this project failed to go up the ladder and that in the early stages, the project was consistently rated as green. By the time it was finally reported as being in Red it was too late to rescue.

Of course it doesn’t have to be like this. Consistently hiding bad news from Business Stakeholders in Project Management Reports is a sure fire way to bring a promising career in the profession to an ignominious end. Thankfully it doesn’t have to be that way.

Learning how to properly complete Project Management Reports which enable progress to be accurately reported whilst ensuring the Project Manager is perceived as being in control, is a real art which is hard to learn. The key is knowing what to report, what to highlight and what to focus on. Remember there is no point in sweating the small stuff. The big picture is what counts, not how it was created.

Project Manager Salary in Beijing, China?

how much is the salary (estimate) for a Project Manager (just general, not very into IT) in Beijing? I feel like I've been offered too low. I'm an expat (but also within Asia). We basically use English in the office, and some Chinese.

I have 2 years experience, have excellent written English (as we often communicate with our clients through e-mail), can speak basic Chinese. I don't deal with really technical stuff. Only the basic between Engineers and clients. I work in downtown Beijing.

Also, how much do companies usually add after the usual 3 months probation? 500 yuan? 1000 yuan?

try out this website.
