Sample Technical Writing Tests

Quadruple Your Business With AB Testing

I admit, the idea of quadrupling your business with AB testing (or any kind of technique for that matter) sounds like a bit of a hyped up claim.

But, before you disregard the idea and go somewhere else let me explain how it really is possible.

In fact, it's not only possible, most of the time it's not even difficult and you'll wish you'd have used this technique earlier.

So if such a massive increase in business is feasible why isn't everyone doing it?

These companies already are and they seem to be doing ok out of it:

  • Amazon.com

  • Google

  • Microsoft

  • BBC

  • eBay

I've just started to use this technique myself and I've already quadrupled my mailing list subscriber rate after just two days of testing.

Ok, that's enough of the hype, let's get down to business with some facts and explanations of how you can use this technique in your business.

A Real Example of AB Testing

Many of the most successful marketers are compulsive testers, they split test everything. So what is split testing, or AB testing as it's sometimes known as?

It's really simple. To use my mailing list example I just swap the heading above the subscription fields automatically every five minutes, technically very easy to do.

Both headings are true, they have to be because we're not here to mislead potential prospects, but I reword them slightly and use a different emphasis.

For example at the time of writing this I'm split testing two headings, one with emphasis on "business mindset tips", the other with emphasis on "business ideas".

I'd been using the "business mindset" heading with reasonable but not great results for months now. However, I noticed that most people find my website in Google by searching for business ideas so I thought I'd test a new heading related to that.

It turns out after only a couple of days of split testing that four times as many people subscribe with the new header. That's an impressive result for the first test, I wish I'd done this months ago.

But that's not the end of it. What I'll do is take the winner of the two headings and then split test that against another heading.

Can you see where this is going? If I keep repeating the process, keeping the winner and split testing it against another heading I'll more than quadruple my subscription rate. I'll find headings which work better and better the more I test.

The best thing about this is that it's easy, free and it totally removes the guesswork, something I always try to do.

How Can You Use AB Testing

With internet marketing split testing is easy. You can use some code to automatically do the split testing for you, then use something like Google Analytics to create goals and track conversion rates.

However, it's not difficult in offline businesses either. Direct marketers have been using split testing for years.

They send out samples of sales letters with slightly different headings or text and see what converts the best before they send out the letters to thousands of people.

It's important though to only change one variable in each of your split tests. For example if you were to change the heading AND text between two sales letter samples, how would you know if it was the heading or the text which increased/decreased conversion rated?

You wouldn't, so it's important to only test one small change at a time.

A good way to track your results in both online and offline businesses is to use promo codes, especially if you offer a discount.

Wherever you usually advertise your business, try creating two adverts with slightly different headings. Offer a small discount in both but use a different promo code in each.

When your customers use the promo code to get their discount you'll know which advert persuaded them to purchase.

With that information you can easily work out which advert works the best. If both ads had the same exposure then it's simply the one with the biggest number of promo code uses.

Remember though, only change one thing at a time between the two ads under test and repeat the process, keeping the winning ad each time and swapping the loser for a new idea.

My Own Experience of Split Testing

I've used split testing many times in the past with great success. My biggest mistake with my mailing list was making assumptions that I knew what my subscribers wanted and not to split test from the start.

I also split test the actual emails I send out, sending out the same email to two different groups but changing only the subject line.

It's surprising how different subject lines (effectively a sales letter heading) can make a massive difference to the email open rates.

In the past I've also split tested sales letters on my websites. Tweaking and testing the headline has literally turned some of my product sales from one or two a month to fifteen or more.

Google AdWords is a great advertising service which makes split testing so easy you'd be crazy not to do it.

I used AdWords for about a year and split tested right to the point where Google scored me 10/10 for my keywords/adverts/landing page combinations. This made my ads much cheaper and more cost effective.

I also split tested the AdWords headings and text until click though rates were around 20%. They started off at below 1% in the early days. Conversion rates for people who purchased/subscribed were well into the double figures too.

In conclusion, split testing really works and using it will give you a massive competitive advantage if your competitors aren't using it. They won't have a clue how you're managing to continually out sell them.

Write the poems you love to read in a poetry book.

(copyright © A.L.Junid. 1.1.2000.)

INTRODUCTION:

A simple step by step ewcercise on writing a good, written poetry foryoung and old alike. It will interest you to know that I have employed this method of application for years to achieve the good poetry results. There are other method of exercises and with the combining step by step application I have added in this book in it is the simplest form to get the result for beginners who often find that their poetry are not good enough to be accepted in an anthology, school magazines, poetry contests and rejections and so forth.. The effect of that one negative answer from the editor's office will remain in their minds for days.

Students, Teachers and others who love reading poetry may find this book entertaining and helpful in their understanding, the method employed and is useable in their professions.

My method of application is approachable in two ways. Firstly, it will bring out the best of each and their work in poetry. Second, your poem will sound much mature and better to your ears, more meaningful with all the zest of that poems you wished to write but could not --- because you are lacking in something.

Read through the guided steps, one at the time and try to understand the method thoroughly. Then try them all-out, and very soon you will have that expressive, beautifully written verse that you could call your own and no one else. And lastly your readers will derive the pleasure, and benefit after reading your written piece.

WRITE THE POEMS THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO READ IN A POETRY BOOK.

YOUR DESIRE to write a poem comes from your love to express your feeling about something, someone or about anything ,that you wish to express your words in poetry in your own way and in your own style. The word 'style' is an expression of things we know to be catchy in every generation, be they the new hairstyle and the clothes they wear. Each generation has their own style, and each person has their own style of doing it, and especially so in writing poetry.

But sometimes the words you write in your poetry just do not come out right? They sounded very different from what you want them to be. "It's just sounded very different, and I wish I could write better than this." Or "How I wish I could write like you!" My advice to you is, DO NOT DESPAIR!

My approach for that your desirable line of poems is simple and understandable that within a few minutes after you read through them , your strength of imagination would bring out that poetic genius in you...

HERE is the step by step method.

This procedure will brake the ice with your written poetry-- that will give the headstart in your exciting poetry writing. Reading through from this simple step I have work out will help you in your writing career. Your will have the access to some of the great works, and their methods of employment. And lastly that writing a poetry would not be that difficult and unmanageable. In fact it will brushed aside your labor of difficulty and to start right away, without a flaw.

The knowledge and skill I often used to begin writing my poetry are my successful key to a good poem. In fact if you know the secret of this you too could succeed as a poet. And I hope that this book will benefits you and the writer in you to express words that only you have the style in your own way.

 STEP ONE:

MAKE your sentences simple. (We are talking about writing our poem in Free Verse, closing all other traditional poems aside at this moment.) Write out all that you want to write about, in prose.

For example:The painting on the canvas at the gallery I saw was a beautiful scenery. I was captivated for the variety of colors used by the artist. The painting was of a country scene of far away land in Asia painted by an uknown artist. Here you have five easy sentences in prose that describes a painting on a canvass at the gallery. It had captured your interest, your imagination and you want to write something out from it. And you wish to express it in simple FREE VERSE.

FROM the 'first sentence' we could group each word gramatically into---the noun, the verb, object noun etc. We leave out the preposition, the adjectives, the adverbs for a simple matter of category.

The first sentence is - The painting on the canvas at the gallery I saw was a beautiful scenery.

HERE how it should looks;

NOUN+VERB+OBJECT.

For the noun we have--- I, painting, canvas.

For the verb to be are--- saw, is.

For the object we have---scenery.

COULD you write down from the above sentence into poem? Yes, you could. There are other alternate grammar structures to suit your style.

And whichever way you choose ---N+V+O; O+V+N; V+O+N.....and so on.

 HERE is an example --- O+V+N--- scenery+saw+I.

(You might think that this is a nonsensical phrase, and it seems to be, but with the help of our imagination we could develop it into a poetic lines. Let's continue with our great work...)

NOW is the correct time to ADD in all the prepositions, and the adjectives for that smooth form. This calls for an imagination. And for this use I prefer the beginning of the first stanza with the preposition 'of' and which will give us this wonderful poem---

Of the scenery + beautiful + I did saw + from the canvas + at the gallery.

AND that will give us this poem --- Preposition 'of' --- Of the scenery

Add in the adjective --- beautiful

ADD in the verb and pronoun --- I did saw

Add in the preposition and noun--- from the canvas.

You have done it. BUT WAIT! Couldn't you add more life to this poem..... And with your imagination still running wild. We now go on to step two.

 STEP TWO.

YOU could add (in brackets) more suitable phrases into the first stanza;                               Of the (living) scenery                                                                                                           beautiful (to the eyes)                                                                                                         (and feelings,) I saw                                                                                                      (melting) from the canvas.

SO here we have a complete stanza in 'Free Verse.' Of course there are other forms of phrases that are suiatable --- but beware. You might just get carried away! If you think that you still want your words added into the first stanza, then make it suitable that would fit in like a King to the Throne!

AVOID words that give no additional meaning and which will only clouded your verse.

LET'S Read again the poem;                                                                                                  Of the living scenery                                                                                                          beautiful to the eyes and feelings, I saw                                                                                 melting from the canvas

AND there you have it? Your first stanza that would give the start of interesting lines to follow afterwards. This is only the beginning of your more major works in the future. This is only an example of an ordinary poem derived from your narrative prose.I am certain you have a lot of interesting things to write that is happening everyday around you.

Just jot down all the interesting parts of events. We do not want a dull and boring poetry because there are too many of them around.

SO do not write all that are too ordinary and dull subjects if you do not want to have a dull and boring POEMS.

Please remember this! It is because your readers might just throw away your hard work. It is a pity that many individuals who could have been a potential good writer should have their articles ended up in the wastepaper basket.

TAKE your time to consider your choice of words? This is as true as drawing a straight line from one point to another. You have all the time in the world to do just that. And your poetry would be better as near as perfection.

Practise, practise and more practise.

Practice writing one simple poem using the technique you have just learn.

GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE! Write from your own personel experiences, from your own everyday conversations, from the many letters you send out to friends. Think about the great achievement of writing one simple good poem from them, that in later days to come those who might read your written pieces would be elevated and found enjoyment in it.

And perhaps one good source in obtaining your good, basic idea of writing a poem is from your own written essay in your school works.

DO TRY THEM ALL OUT! This is a good advice from a good founded imagination..'

LET us now go back to the practise, carry on our steps a little further on.

 STEP THREE:

WITH our imagintion still beaming somewhere in our heads, there are still certain words from the passage that we could use and utilized.

The words are--- 'at the gallery' --- which is from the first sentence of STEP ONE of which we have left out.

WE want to use this phrase for the opening of our second stanza. And which should read as follows--                                                                                                                                   at the gallery.

By using the V+O+N ---

captivated+variety of colour+I

And with an imagination it is simple now for the above phrases to appear as this:

We add the verb and the noun --- My eyes captivated

We add one conjunction ---

by its color in varieties

We add the object noun --- I am not the art

AND so we have just completed another stanza. If we add the two stanzas together we do have one splendid piece of poetry at our hands.

Of the living scenery                                                                                                           beutiful to the feelings I saw                                                                                       melting from the canvas .                                                                                                       My eyes were captivated                                                                                                      by its color and variety;                                                                                                           I am not art

(DO ADD THIS PHRASE)            Nor the Artist.

"Goodness me! Is this poem written by you?" Someone might ask. And so it will be the beginning of all that wonderful feeling of success! The next step is for you to write more?Follow the steps carefully, one by one, you are on the beginning of something great.

Try out on your own to write for the third stanza. It derives from the last sentence of the example given earlier on.

The sentence is: --- 'The painting was of a country scene of a far away land in Asia painted by an unknown Artist.'

POINTS TO REMEMBER:

REMEMBER--- to divide the different part of grammar into separate groups.

REMEMBER--- to use the diverse point of writing structure as shown in step one.

Yours sincerely.

You need not worry about your writing on anything you have the genuine feelings to write about. We writers learned from our mistakes. Like in the school, learning the alphabet, writing our names,  we have to go through year after year of classses.Or like one tremondous journey for all to have to  go through just to write a good poem.
