How to break into medical technical writing? My aunt has 30 years experience as an RN 20 of them as a Nurse?
Practitioner (a Master's Degree she can write prescriptions and do exams) She is near retiring and is thinking about doing this as a 2d career. How to start and what specifically are the steps to follow? Does she need more education? I want to surprise her.
Thank you!
Your aunt is an excellent candidate for a medical writing career!
My recommendation is that she join the American Medical Writers Association. They have online certification programs for medical writers and various specialty tracks. They also have networking opportunities, a job board, and a directory for freelancers.
The association will help her with what steps to follow for a career in medical writing. The first thing she needs to do is learn the skills of the trade which are covered in the Essential Skills certificate. You don't have to be a member to take the courses, but if she is going to take quite a few of them in one year, it is cheaper to join then register for the courses at the member rate.
