Training for a Technical Writing Career Through Online Studies
A course was booked for but no conditions were verbalised or in writing.Credit card details were given for booking but not for charging of the fees.Nothing was signed for.I was not able to attend and the fees were deducted and now they wont return the fees and the owner is the only one who can authorise a return.He is always unavailible and no message is getting through. They are avoiding me as much as possible. Is there a specific organisation which one could report this to.
Best person to help you in London is a solicitor. Many would send a warning letter to the college and charge you only Stg£50 to £100 or so for the service. You would be surprized how effective this is! There are other avenues (director of consumer affairs, consumer ombudsman, etc but these offices are beaureaucratic and slow.

My recommendation is that she join the American Medical Writers Association. They have online certification programs for medical writers and various specialty tracks. They also have networking opportunities, a job board, and a directory for freelancers.
The association will help her with what steps to follow for a career in medical writing. The first thing she needs to do is learn the skills of the trade which are covered in the Essential Skills certificate. You don't have to be a member to take the courses, but if she is going to take quite a few of them in one year, it is cheaper to join then register for the courses at the member rate.

I'd recommend you reverse the order. Do the course in technical writing first, get a job in that field, and work a couple of years. Then go back for the MBA. You'll be a stronger candidate after the MBA if you go this track.

I'm trying to figure out which degree is most important for technical writers: a technical related degree or an english degree? I have a bit of a technical background, and I've had people tell me I'm a good writer.
The problem is that I'm a fourth year in college (yes, that's right - four years and just now deciding to change my career path). I was going to go into psychology, so I have a lot of psychology courses with about three programming courses, but only two english composition courses.
I don't like the idea of going for a bachelors of english because I've always thought of english classes in college as being very subjective with their grading, as opposed to tech classes which are more objective (either you do it correctly or not).
Any advice on best degrees for technical writers?
Subjective and objective is a false dichotomy here. It's really about the needs of your end-user.
For hardware and complex, deep software an EE or CS person who has good writing skills would do better. Here, the need tilts toward completeness. Programming skills come into play too because in some cases you'll be called upon to use tools to automate the process (e.g., make, perl scripting, LXR, etc.) Your audience is other EE/CS people so they tend to care less about style or pedagogy.
For some software and end-user literature a BA in English would be preferable because the emphasis will be on organizing and simplifying concepts and using multiple ways to convey them: pedagogy matters here. Don't kid yourself, it's still objective problem-solving. From a writing standpoint these kind of docs are actually more challenging because you're trying to say more with less. You also need additional skills in graphics, typesetting, layout style and so forth.

I am looking for a course to send an employee to. It should be an introductory course that teaches technical writing basics. I am looking for something that is instructor led and less than two weeks; not a college semester or online course.
I thought IUPUI used to offer such a course in their Continuing Education (non degree) program but I have been unable to unearth it.

English test scoring systems
The main English language tests used for university entrance all report their scores on a different scale. IELTS uses a scale of 0 – 9, TOEFL IBT (Internet based test) uses numbers from 40 to 120, PTE Academic is graded from 10 to 90 and the Cambridge tests (FCE, CAE, CPE) has A – E grades.
So how do you know what your score in one test equals in one of the other tests?
This is an interesting question and there are many academics, companies and language assessment specialists who try to map the scores onto each other to produce what is called an equivalence chart. They usually look something like this:

So, how do they do it?
English language testing experts look at the content of each test and what a typical student can do at each level of each test and decide broadly what a grade or score in one test means in another. This may be different according to the content of the test for example if one test has more speaking or writing or based on statistics of previous students who took a particular test. Equivalence charts are often reviewed by universities every few years based on the performance of previous students on university courses who were admitted with a certain test or test score.
Why is there not one standard equivalence chart?
This is mainly because the tests are not measuring the exactly the same skills in exactly the
same way so an exact comparison is impossible to make. The various equivalence charts can differ greatly depending on who did the comparison. Remember that the grading systems are different and the way of marking is different too. Some tests use computer marking only while others use human markers only or a combination of both.
What does this mean for students trying to enter university in an English speaking country?
Firstly it means doing some research – often the university equivalence chart is a public
document so you can see what scores are being asked for each test. This way you can see if your test score meets the requirements or use the equivalence chart to help you decide which test to take. You may notice that universities have different equivalence charts which could affect the test you choose to do for specific universities or as a result of looking at equivalence charts you might change your mind about which universities to apply to.

Hello im currently doing my GCSEs, and i'm wondering what a levels I should do next year. I'm planning on doing 4 a levels, 3 of them being Maths, Further Maths and Physics. I'm just wondering what would be good for a fourth subject, im thinking either chemistry or philosophy, can anyone please advise me what to take? And can you tell me if i need any IT skills, and if a do, pls tell me what i need. Thank you
It doesn't matter what 4th a level you take. Maths, further maths and physics will be sufficient for the course you want to do. I recommend that for your 4th a level you do a subject that you enjoy as the other 3 a levels you are doing are quite intense (I did those a levels a few years ago).
As for needing IT skills. They are important for any course but you don't need a formal qualification (higher than GCSE). If you're not doing GCSE ICT then you could do a key skills qualification in IT.

Classes start today. I've been teaching this class that I created for years, and it's time for some changes (new strategies, new textbooks and materials, and a new course outline or syllabus). Students have told me that our poetry class is the one place in our college where they are safe to relax, express themselves, and be themselves. This is true for me too as the instructor.
I'm thinking of adding the following: music playing as students enter the classroom, non-religious meditation or visualization exercises to help them relax and open to their creativity, and time set aside for reflective journaling at the end of class
This is a technical college in a large urban city (NYC). The students come from many different cultural backgrounds. The students who take this class usu. think outside the box but come to class on the first day wondering what the heck they are doing there. Many are writing phobic. Some have anger management problems.

Sindy is right about the aroma sense.... How about soft lighting ? We used to use this in our mind control classes which I headed. The reason for this lighting was to make the newcomers feel less shy and more welcomed.
The comments we had from most of our group was the low lighting which made them feel more at ease, less visible to others.
I would suggest to pick each student and ask them what they expect from this class, or what they would like to see or not like to see.
After a few days of getting everybody's opinion, I woudl then go fro there. maybe they can each bring something that is appropriate for the class.
