Write Attention Getting Adverts

The most important aspect of any business is selling the product or service. Without sales, no business can exist for very long.

All sales begin with some form of advertising. To build sales, this advertising must be seen or heard by potential buyers, and cause them to react to the advertising in some way. The credit for the success, or the blame for the failure of almost all ads, reverts back to the ad itself.

Generally, the "ad writer" wants the prospect to do one of the following:

a) Visit the store to see and judge the product for himself, or immediately write a check and send for the merchandise being advertised.

b) Phone for an appointment to hear the full sales presentation, or write for further information which amounts to the same thing.

The bottom line in any ad is quite simple: To make the reader buy the product or service. Any ad that causes the reader to only pause in this thinking, to just admire the product, or to simply believe what's written about the product - is not doing its job completely.

The "ad writer" must know exactly what he wants his reader to do, and any that does not elicit the desired action is an absolute waste of time and money.

In order to elicit the desired action from the prospect, all ads are written according to a simple "master formula" which is:

1) Attract the "attention" of your prospect.

2) "Interest" your prospect in the product

3) Cause your prospect to "desire" the product

4) Demand "action" from the prospect

Never forget the basic rule of advertising copywriting: If the ad is not read, it won't stimulate any sale; if it is not seen, it cannot be read; and if it does not command or grab the attention of the reader, it will not be seen!

Most successful advertising copywriters know these fundamentals backwards and forwards. Whether you know them already or you're just now being exposed to them, your knowledge and practice of these fundamentals will determine the extent of your success as an advertising copywriter.

CLASSIFIED ADS

Classified ads are the ads from which all successful businesses are started. These small, relatively inexpensive ads, give the beginner an opportunity to advertise his product or service without losing his shirt if the ad doesn't pull or the people don't break his door down with demands for his product. Classified ads are written according to all the advertising rules. What is said in a classified ad is the same that's said in a larger, more elaborate type of ad, except in condensed form.

To start learning how to write good classified ads, clip ten classified ads form ten different mail order type publications - ads that you think are pretty good. Paste each of these ads onto a separate sheet of paper.

Analyze each of these ads: How has the writer attracted your attention - what about the ads keeps your interest - are you stimulated to want to know more about the product being advertised - and finally, what action must you take? Are all of these points covered in the ad? How strongly are you "turned on" by each of these ads?

Rate these ads on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the best according to the formula I've given you. Now, just for practice, without clipping the ads, do the same thing with ten different ads from a Wards or Penney's catalog. In fact, every ad you see form now on, quickly analyze it, and rate it somewhere on your scale. If you'll practice this exercise on a regular basis, you'll soon be able to quickly recognize the "Power Points" of any ad you see, and know within your own mind whether an ad is good, bad or otherwise, and what makes it so.

Practice for an hour each day, write the ads you've rated 8, 9 and 10 exactly as they've been written. This will give you the "feel" of the fundamentals and style necessary in writing classified ads.

Your next project will be to pick out what you consider to be the ten "worst" ads you can find in the classifieds sections. Clip these out and paste them onto a sheet of paper so you can work on them.

Read these ads over a couple of times, and then beside each of them, write a short comment stating why you think it's bad: Lost in the crowd, doesn't attract attention - doesn't hold the reader's interest - nothing special to make the reader want to own the product - no demand for action.

You probably already know what's coming next, and that's right. Break out those pencils, erasers and scratch paper - and start rewriting these ads to include the missing elements.

Each day for the next month, practice writing the ten best ads for an hour, just the way they were originally written. Pick out ten of the worst ads, analyze those ads, and then practice rewriting those until they measure up to doing the job they were intended to do.

Once you're satisfied that the ads you've rewritten are perfect, go back into each ad and cross out the words that can be eliminated without detracting from the ad. Classified ads are almost always "finalized" in the style of a telegram.

EXAMPLE: I'll arrive at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the 15th. Meet me at Sardi's. All my love, Jim.

EDITED FOR SENDING: Arrive 2pm - 15th - Sardi's. Love, Jim.

CLASSIFIED AD: Save on your food bills! Reduced prices on every shelf in the store! Stock up now while supplies are complete! Come on in today, to Jerry's Family Supermarkets!

EDITED FOR PUBLICATION: Save on Food! Everything bargain priced! Limited Supplies! Hurry! Jerry's Markets!

It takes dedicated and regular practice, but you can do it. Simply recognize and understand the basic formula - practice reading and writing the good ones - and rewriting the bad ones to make them better. Practice, and keep at it, over and over, every day - until the formula, the idea, and the feel of this kind of ad writing becomes second nature to you. This is the ONLY WAY to gain expertise in writing good classified ads.

DISPLAY ADVERTISEMENTS

A display or space ad differs from a classified ad because it has a headline, layout, and because the style isn't telegraphic. However, the fundamentals of writing the display or space ad are exactly the same as for a classified ad. The basic difference is that you have more room in which to emphasize the "master formula."

Most successful copywriters rate the headline and/or the lead sentence of an ad as the most important part of the ad, and in reality, you should do the same. After all, when you ad is surrounded by hundreds of other ads, and information or entertainment, what makes you think anyone is going to see your particular ad?

The truth is, they're not going to see your ad unless you can "grab" their attention and entice them to read all of what you have to say. Your headline, or lead sentence when no headline is used, has to make it more difficult for your prospect to ignore or pass over, than to stop and read your ad. If you don't capture the attention of your reader with your headline, anything beyond is useless effort and wasted money.

Successful advertising headlines - in classified ads, your first three to five words serve as your headline - are written as promises, either implied or direct. The former promises to show you how to save money, make money, or attain a desired goal. The latter is a warning against something undesirable.

EXAMPLE OF A PROMISE: Are You Ready To Become A Millionaire - In Just 18 Months?

EXAMPLE OF A WARNING: Do You Make These Mistakes In English?

In both of these examples, I've posed a question as the headline. Headlines that ask a question seem to attract the reader's attention almost as surely as a moth is drawn to a flame. Once he's seen the question, he just can't seem to keep himself from reading the rest of the ad to find out the answer. The best headline questions are those that challenge the reader; that involve his self esteem, and do not allow him to dismiss your question with a simple yes or no.

You'll be the envy of your friends is another kind of "reader appeal" to incorporate into your headline whenever appropriate. The appeal has to do with basic psychology: everyone wants to be well thought of, and consequently, will read into the body of your ad to find out how he can gain the respect and accolades of his friends.

Wherever and whenever possible, use colloquialisms or words that are not usually found in advertisements. The idea is to shock or shake the reader out of his reverie and cause him to take notice of your ad. Most of the headlines you see day in and day out, have a certain sameness with just the words rearranged. The reader may see these headlines with his eyes, but his brain fails to focus on any of them because there's nothing different or out of the ordinary to arrest his attention.

EXAMPLE OF COLLOQUIALISM: Are You Developing a POT BELLY?

Another attention-grabber kind of headline is the comparative priced magazine headline: Three For Only $3, Regularly $3 Each! Still another of the "tried and proven" kind of headlines is the specific question: Do You Suffer From These Symptoms. And of course, if you offer a strong guarantee, you should say so in your headline: Your Money Refunded, If You Don't Make $100,00 Your First Year.

How To headlines have a very strong basic appeal, but in some instances, they're better used as book titles than advertising headlines. Who Else wants in on the finer things - which your product or service presumably offers - is another approach with a very strong reader appeal. The psychology here being the need of everyone to belong to a group - complete with status and prestige motivations.

Whenever, and as often as you can possible work it in, you should use the word "you" in your headline, and throughout your copy. After all, your ad should be directed to "one" person, and the person reading your ad wants to feel that you're talking to him personally, not everyone who lives on his street.

Personalize, and be specific! You can throw the teachings of your English teachers out the window, and the rules of "third person, singular" or whatever else tends to inhibit your writing. Whenever you sit down to write advertising copy intended to pull the orders - sell the product - you should picture yourself in a one-on-one situation and "talk" to your reader just as if you were sitting across from him at your dining room table. Say what you mean, and sell HIM on the product your offering. Be specific and ask him if these are the things that bother him - are these the things he wants - and he's the one you want to buy the product...

The layout you devise for your ad, or the frame you build around it, should also command attention. Either make it so spectacular that it stands out like lobster at a chili dinner, or so uncommonly simple that it catches the reader's eye because of its very simplicity. It's also important that you don't get cute with a lot of unrelated graphics and artwork. Your ad should convey the feeling of excitement and movement, but should not tire the eyes or disrupt the flow of the message you are trying to present.

Any graphics or artwork you use should be relevant to your product, it's use and/or the copy you have written about it. Graphics should not be used as artistic touches, or to create an atmosphere. Any illustrations with your ad should compliment the selling of your product, and prove or substantiate specific points in your copy.

Once you have your reader's attention, the only way you are going to keep it, is by quickly and emphatically telling him what your product will do for him.

Your potential buyer doesn't care in the least how long it's taken you to produce the product, how lone you have been in business, nor how many years you've spend learning your craft. He wants to know specifically how he is going to benefit form the purchase of your product.

Generally, his wants will fall into one of the following categories: Better health, more comfort, more money, more leisure time, more popularity, greater beauty, success and/or security.

Even though you have your reader's attention, you must follow through with an enumeration of the benefits you can gain. In essence, you must reiterate the advantages, comfort and happiness he'll enjoy - as you have implied in your headline.

Mentally picture your prospect - determine his wants and emotional needs - put yourself in his shoes, and ask yourself: If I were reading this ad, what are the things that would appeal to me? Write your copy to appeal to your reader's wants and emotional needs/ego cravings.

Remember, it's not the "safety features" that have sold cars for the past 50 years - nor has it been the need of transportation - it has been, and almost certainly always will be the advertising writer's recognition of people's wants and emotional needs/ego cravings. Visualize your prospect, recognize his wants and satisfy them. Writing good advertising copy is nothing more or less than knowing "who" your buyers are; recognizing what he wants; and then telling him how your product will fulfill each of those wants. Remember this because it's one of the "vitally important" keys to writing advertising copy that does the job you intend for it to do.

The "desire" portion of your ad is where you present the facts of your product; create and justify your prospect's conviction, and cause him to demand "a piece of the action" for himself.

It's vitally necessary that you present "proven facts" about your product because survey results show that at least 80% of the people reading your ad - especially those reading it for the first time - will tend to question its authenticity.

So, the more facts you can present in the ad, the more credible your offer. As you write this part of your ad, always remember that the more facts about the product you present, the more product you'll sell. People want facts as reasons, and/or excuses for buying a product - to justify to themselves and others, that they have not been "taken" by a slick copywriter.

It's like the girl who wants to marry the guy her father calls a "no good bum." Her heart - her emotions - tell her yes, but she needs to nullify the seed of doubt lingering in her mind - to rationalize her decision to go on with the wedding.

In other words, the "desire" portion of your ad has to build belief and credibility in the mind of your prospect. It has to assure him of his good judgment in the final decision to buy - furnish evidence of the benefits you have promised - and afford him a "safety net" in case anyone should question his decision to buy.

People tend to believe the things that appeal to their individual desires, fears and other emotions. Once you have established a belief in this manner, logic and reasoning are used to support it. People believe what they "want" to believe. Your reader "wants" to believe your ad if he has read it through this far - it is up to you to support his initial desire.

Study your product and everything about it - visualize the wants of your prospective buyers - dig up the facts, and you'll almost always find plenty of facts to support the buyer's reasons for buying.

Here is where you use results of tests conducted, growing sales figures to prove increasing popularity, and "user" testimonials or endorsements. It's also important that you present these facts - test results, sales view, and not that of the manufacturer.

Before you end this portion of your ad and get into your demand for action, summarize everything you've presented thus far. Draw a mental picture for your potential buyer. Let him imagine owning the product. Induce him to visualize all of the benefits you have promised. Give him the keys to seeing himself richer, enjoying luxury, having time to do whatever he would like to do, and with all of his dreams fulfilled.

This can be handled in one or two sentences, or spelled out in a paragraph or more, but it is the absolute ingredient you must include prior to closing the sale. Study all the sales presentations you have ever heard - look at every winning ad - this is the element included in all of them that actually makes the sale for you. Remember it, use it, and don't try to sell anything without it.

As Victor Schwab puts is so succinctly in his best selling book, How To Write A Good Advertisement: Every one of the fundamentals in the "master formula" is necessary. Those sitting across from him at your dining people who are "easy" to sell may perhaps be sold even if some of these factors are left out, but it's wiser to plan your advertisement so that it will have a powerful impact upon those who are "hardest" to sell. For, unlike fact-to-face selling, we cannot in printed advertising come to a "trial close" in our sales talk - in order to see if those who are easier to sell will welcome the dotted line without further persuasion. We must assume that we are talking to the hardest ones - and that the more thoroughly our copy sells both the hard and the easy, the better chance we have against the competition for the consumer's dollar - and also the less dependent we will be upon the usual completely ineffective follow through on our advertising effort which later takes place at the sales counter itself.

ASK FOR ACTION! DEMAND THE MONEY!

Lots of ads are beautiful, almost perfectly written, and quite convincing - yet they fail to ask for or demand action form the reader. If you want the reader to have your product, then tell him so and demand that he send his money now. Unless you enjoy entertaining your prospects with your beautiful writing skills, always demand that he complete the sale now, by taking action now - by calling a telephone number and ordering, or by writing his check and rushing it to the post office.

Once you have got him on the hook, land him! Don't let him get away!

Probably, one of the most common and best methods of moving the reader to act now, is written in some form of the following:

All of this can be yours! You can start enjoying this new way of life immediately, simply by sending a check for $XX! Don't put it off, then later wish you had gotten in on the ground floor! Make out that check now, and "be IN on the ground floor!" Act now, and as an "early-bird" buyer, we'll include a big bonus package - absolutely free, simply for acting immediately! You win all the way! We take all the risk! If you are not satisfied, simply return the product and we will quickly refund your money! Do it now! Get that check on its way to us today, and receive the big bonus package! After next week, we won't be able to include the bonus as a part of this fantastic deal, so act now! The sooner you act, you more you win!

Offering a reward of some kind will almost always stimulate the prospect to take action. However, in mentioning the reward or bonus, be very careful that you don't end up receiving primarily, requests for the bonus with mountains of requests for refunds on the product to follow. The bonus should be mentioned only casually if you are asking for product orders; and with lots of fanfare only when you are seeking inquiries.

Too often the copywriter, in his enthusiasm to pull in a record number of responses, confuses the reader by "forgetting about the product," and devoting his entire space allotted for the "demand for action" to sending for the bonus. Any reward offered should be closely related to the product, and a bonus offered only for immediate action on the part of the potential buyer.

Specify a time limit. Tell your prospect that he must act within a certain time limit or lose out on the bonus, face probably higher prices, or even the withdrawal of your offer. This is always a good hook to get action.

Any kind of guarantee you offer always helps you produce action from the prospect. And the more liberal you can make your guarantee, the more product orders you will receive. Be sure you state the guarantee clearly and simply. Make it so easy to understand that even a child would not misinterpret what you are saying.

The action you want your prospect to take should be easy - clearly stated - and devoid of any complicated procedural steps on his part, or numerous directions for him to follow.

Picture your prospect, very comfortable in his favorite easy chair, idly flipping through a magazine while "half-watching" TV. He notices your ad, reads through it, and he is sold on your product. Now what does he do?

Remember, he's very comfortable - you have "grabbed" his attention, sparked his interest, painted a picture of him enjoying a new kind of satisfaction, and he is ready to buy...

Anything and everything you ask or cause him to do is going to disrupt this aura of comfort and contentment. Whatever he must do had better be simple, quick and easy!

Tell him without any ifs, ands or buts, what to do - fill out the coupon, include your check for the full amount, and send it in to us today! Make it as easy for him as you possibly can - simply and dirert. And by all means, make sure your address is on the order form he is supposed to complete and mail in to you - your name and address on the order form, as well as just above it. People sometimes fill out a coupon, tear it off, seal it in an envelope and don't know where to send it. The easier you make it for him to respond, the more responses you'll get!

There you have it, a complete short course on how to write ads that will pull more orders for you - sell more of your product for you. It's important to learn "why" ads are written as they are - to understand and use, the "master formula" in your own ad writing endeavors.

By conscientiously studying good advertising copy, and practice in writing ads of your own, now that you have the knowledge and understand what makes advertising copy work, you should be able to quickly develop your copywriting abilities to produce order-pulling ads for your own products. Even so, and once you do become proficient in writing ads for your own products, you must never stop "noticing" how ads are written, designed and put together by other people. To stop learning would be comparable to shutting off from the rest of the world.

The best ad writers are people in touch with the world in which they live. Everytime they see a good ad, they clip it out and save it. Regularly, they pull what makes them good, and why they work. There's no school in the country that can give you the same kind of education and expertise so necessary in the field of ad writing. You must keep yourself up-to-date, aware of, and in-the-know about the other guy - his innovations, style, changes, and the methods he is using to sell his products. On-the-job training - study and practice - that's what it takes - and if you have got that burning ambition to succeed, you can do it too!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1. WHAT'S THE MOST PROFITABLE WAY TO USE CLASSIFIEDS...

Classifieds are best used to build your mailing list of qualified prospects. Use classified to offer a free catalog, booklet or report relative to your product line.

2. WHAT CAN YOU SELL "DIRECTLY" FROM CLASSIFIEDS...

Generally, anything and everything, so long as it doesn't cost more than five dollars which is about the most people will pay in response to an offer in the classifieds. These types of ads are great for pulling inquiries such as: Write for further information; Send $3, get two for the price of one; Dealers wanted, send for product info and a real money-maker's kit!

3. WHAT ARE THE BEST MONTHS OF THE YEAR TO ADVERTISE...

All twelve months of the year! Responses to your ads during some months will be slower in accumulating, but by keying your ads according to the month they appear, and a careful tabulation of your returns from each keyed ad, you will see that steady year round advertising will continue to pull orders for you, regardless of the month it's published. I've personally received inquiries and orders from ads placed as long as 2 years previous to the date of the response!

4. ARE MAIL ORDER PUBLICATIONS GOOD ADVERTISING BUYS...

The lease effective are the ad sheets. Most of the ads in these publications are "exchange ads," meaning that the publisher of ad sheet "A" runs the ads of publisher "B" without charge, because publisher "B" is running the ads of publisher "A" without charge. The "claimed" circulation figures of these publications are almost always based on "wishes, hopes and wants" while the "true" circulation goes out to similar small, part-time mail order dealers. Very poor medium for investing advertising dollars because everybody receiving a copy is a "seller" and nobody is buying. When an ad sheet is received by someone not involved in mail order, it is usually given a cursory glance and then discarded as "junk mail."

Tabloid newspapers are slightly better than the ad sheets, but not by much! The important difference with the tabloids is in the "helpful information" articles they try to carry for the mail order beginner. A "fair media" for recruiting dealers or independent sales reps for mail order products, and for renting mailing lists, but still circulated amongst "sellers" with very few buyers. Besides that, the life of a mail order tab sheet is about the same as that of your daily newspaper.

With mail order magazines, it depends on the quality of the publication and its business concepts. Some mail order magazines are nothing more than expanded ad sheets, while others - such as BOOK BUSINESS MART - strive to help the opportunity seekers with on-going advice and tips he can use in the development and growth of his own wealth-building projects. Book Business Mart is not just the fastest growing publication in the mail order scene today; it's also the first publication in more than 20 years to offer real help anyone can use in achieving his own version of "The American Dream" of building one's own business form a "shoestring beginning" into a multi-million dollar empire!

5. HOW CAN I DECIDE WHERE TO ADVERTISE MY PRODUCT...

First of all, you have to determine who your prospective buyers are. Then you do a little bit of market research. Talk to your friends, neighbors and people at random who might fit this profile. Ask them if they would be interested in a product such as yours, and then ask them which publications they read. Next, go to your public library for a listing of the publications of this type from the Standard Rate & Data Service catalogs.

Make a list of the addresses, circulation figures, reader demographics and advertising rates. To determine the true costs of your advertising and decide which is the better buy, divide the total audited circulation figure into the cost for a one inch ad: $10 per inch with a publication showing 10,000 circulation would be 10,000 into $10 or 10¢ per thousand. Looking at the advertising rates for Book Business Mart, you would take 42,500 into $15 for an advertising rate of less that THREE TENTHS OF ONE CENT PER THOUSAND. Obviously, your best buy in this case would be Book Business Mart because of the lower cost per thousand.

Write and ask for sample copies of the magazines you have tentatively chosen to place your advertising in. Look over their advertising - be sure that they don't or won't put your ad in the "gutter" which is the inside column next to the binding. How many other mail order type ads are they carrying - you want to go with a publication that's busy, not one that has only a few ads. The more ads in the publication, the better the response the advertisers are getting, or else they wouldn't be investing their money in that publication.

To "properly" test your ad, you should let it run through at least three consecutive issues of any publication. If your responses are small, try a different publication. Then, if your responses are still small, look at your ad and think about rewriting it for greater appeal, and pulling power. In a great many instances, it's the ad and not the publication's pulling power that's at fault!

Letter Drafting And Report Writing

Is a counselor's letter of recommendation necessary for Stanford?

I'm applying to Stanford for the Fall 2010 term and I already have two letters from my teachers.
Apart from my secondary school reports and a few basic questions in the CommonApp page, does my counselor HAVE to write me a recommendation letter? Or the two I mentioned above enough?

Also, my teachers are okay with me drafting the letters and asking for their approval later. What should I ideally say about myself that would impress the admissions office?

The counselors letter is considered by most schools to be the schools recommendation and as such is necessary./

Notation that in the sub terminal section of the inform - conclusions and recommendations - you are healthy to poker untidily the primary issues. They should be stated plainly and should NOT declare any new content. Writing a report is really an art.

Mitotic stages?

I have to write a report on the mitotic stages. We created an onion root tip in the slide and then saw how many cells were going under mitosis and which stages they were in.

I have two questions. Please keep in mind I tried to find sources myself but had no luck.

1. Does anyone know of a source that mentions which stage is the slowest (hence represented the most under the slide) and which ones are faster?

2. Is there a source that can confirm that the mitotic stages in animals and plants are most about the same in terms of how fast each stage progresses?

Thanks in advance.

Mitosis
What is (and is not) mitosis? Mitosis is nuclear division plus cytokinesis, and produces two identical daughter cells during prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Interphase is often included in discussions of mitosis, but interphase is technically not part of mitosis, but rather encompasses stages G1, S, and G2 of the cell cycle.
Interphase & mitosis Interphase

The cell is engaged in metabolic activity and performing its prepare for mitosis (the next four phases that lead up to and include nuclear division). Chromosomes are not clearly discerned in the nucleus, although a dark spot called the nucleolus may be visible. The cell may contain a pair of centrioles (or microtubule organizing centers in plants) both of which are organizational sites for microtubules.

Prophase

Chromatin in the nucleus begins to condense and becomes visible in the light microscope as chromosomes. The nucleolus disappears. Centrioles begin moving to opposite ends of the cell and fibers extend from the centromeres. Some fibers cross the cell to form the mitotic spindle.

Prometaphase

The nuclear membrane dissolves, marking the beginning of prometaphase. Proteins attach to the centromeres creating the kinetochores. Microtubules attach at the kinetochores and the chromosomes begin moving.

Metaphase

Spindle fibers align the chromosomes along the middle of the cell nucleus. This line is referred to as the metaphase plate. This organization helps to ensure that in the next phase, when the chromosomes are separated, each new nucleus will receive one copy of each chromosome.

Anaphase

The paired chromosomes separate at the kinetochores and move to opposite sides of the cell. Motion results from a combination of kinetochore movement along the spindle microtubules and through the physical interaction of polar microtubules.

Telophase

Chromatids arrive at opposite poles of cell, and new membranes form around the daughter nuclei. The chromosomes disperse and are no longer visible under the light microscope. The spindle fibers disperse, and cytokinesis or the partitioning of the cell may also begin during this stage.

Cytokinesis

In animal cells, cytokinesis results when a fiber ring composed of a protein called actin around the center of the cell contracts pinching the cell into two daughter cells, each with one nucleus. In plant cells, the rigid wall requires that a cell plate be synthesized between the two daughter cells.

Stages Of Research Report Writing

stages of research report writing"stages of research report writing"

Students' Research Process

In spite of teachers' misgivings and students' complaints, the research paper remains one of the most common assignments in undergraduate college writing programs across the country. In addition, much of the writing that students are expected to produce in courses across the curriculum requires them to locate and use research material.

Most writing teachers would agree that successful writers must be able to gather, interpret, integrate, and acknowledge material from a variety of sources, but many teachers are disappointed in their students' responses to research paper assignments and disillusioned about their abilities to teach students these critical processes. Surprisingly, in spite of the important role that research plays in academic writing, researchers have only begun to examine how students approach the process of researching a topic for writing (Stotsky, 1990).

In two valuable exploratory studies, Kuhlthau (1983, 1988) used questionnaires, interviews, and journals to examine how advanced high school and college students defined and directed their own searches for information to be used in writing. She found that these students moved through a series of six overlapping stages during the search process, which included developing a personal need for the search, selecting a topic, exploring available sources, developing a focus for the paper, collecting relevant material, and preparing the material for presentation. Most important, students moved through these stages before they actually began writing drafts of their papers. This means that a large portion of the critical work required to produce a research paper often takes place during the search process, rather than during the custom essay writing process.

Research reveals that there is a considerable difference between the way many students view the process of research and the way most college instructors and researchers view it. Schwegler and Shamoon (1982) interviewed college students about why they wrote research papers and why they thought teachers assigned them. They found that generally students believe that research writing assignments are intended to test their ability to locate and reproduce information for a teacher who knows more about their topics than they do and who will base their grades on the quantity of information presented and the correctness of documentation. In contrast, they found that teachers believe that the aim of research is to "test a theory, to follow up on previous research, or to explore a problem posed by other research or by events" (p. 819). Perhaps most significant, Schwegler and Shamoon found that "college instructors view the research paper as a means to accomplish one of the primary goals of college instruction: to get students to think in the same critical, analytical, inquiring mode as instructors do -- like a literary critic, a sociologist, an art historian, or a chemist" (p. 821). The differences between the students' and teachers' views are striking. Students define the research process as an exercise in information-gathering while teachers see it as a way to extend their knowledge through critical inquiry and analysis.

The differences between these contrasting goals for research writing are even more striking when we examine how students and more experienced academic writers actually go about locating and evaluating sources to be used in writing. The majority of the freshmen set out on a fact-finding mission, using "topic-driven" techniques that would allow them to find and assemble information on their topic as quickly as possible. For example, students evaluated possible sources by determining how easily information could be extracted. One student explained her technique for determining this: "Skim the index for your topic; if information is spread out [sprinkled over several distant pages], then reject that book because you would have to read too much . . . you should try to find sources that have pockets or chunks of information that can be read and summarized easily" (Nelson & Hayes, 1988, p. 5). In contrast, the more advanced writers approached their research very differently. They described their initial purpose for conducting research in various ways: "to make a case; to argue for a position; to find a provocative or new approach" (Nelson & Hayes, 1988, p. 3). These goals led to "issue-driven" search strategies that allowed students to zero in on issues and to evaluate the relevance and validity of possible sources. For example, three of the advanced students reported that they skimmed periodical indexes, such as The New York Times index, in order to get an overview of the major issues surrounding their topic, and they used this information to help them find an "angle" or issue to explore. Unlike the "topic-driven" freshmen, these more advanced students evaluated prospective sources rhetorically, asking "Who wrote this, when, and for what purpose?" They chose sources based on their relevance and reliability, not on how easily material could be extracted and reproduced. What emerges from these studies are very different views of the goals and strategies involved in researching a topic for writing. It appears that some students may interpret the goals of research-based writing in very limited terms and that these limited task interpretations may lead them to choose truncated paths when they are searching for material to be used in writing.

But why do students define and approach their research assignments so differently? There are several possible explanations worth considering. First, perhaps the more experienced writers have particular knowledge about using library resources that the less experienced students lack. The "topic-driven" search strategies may be the inevitable outcome when students don't have the knowledge needed to conduct a thorough search of the library's resources. Other studies of students' search processes suggest that this may be part of the problem. An early study of nearly fifty college freshmen at Bucknell University reported that "the conception of research on the part of many [students] appeared to be limited and unsophisticated -- often involving little more than finding a book and checking it out of the library" (Reed, 1974, p. 20). Based on her extensive study of the search processes of advanced English high school seniors, Kuhlthau (1985) has suggested that some students may need to "learn to make a comprehensive search of all sources . . . and to extend their search beyond being satisfied with a few books located through the card catalogue" (p. 39). While college freshmen may need to learn how to take advantage of the range of resources available in university libraries, it seems that unless the limited goals that students bring to the research process in the first place are changed, they may continue to be satisfied with a few easily located sources. If their primary goal is to assemble and reproduce what others have written on a topic as efficiently as possible, then long, involved searches are unnecessary. Perhaps this is why students who have attended library tours and received in-depth library skills instruction continue to disappoint their teachers. Such knowledge is largely useless if students are on a fact-finding mission with the sole goal of locating sources with easily plundered pockets of information.

When teachers merely assigned a topic and a due date for papers, students were more likely to procrastinate until the last minute and to rely on shortcuts and "topic-driven" search strategies. However, when teachers provided real purposes for conducting research -- for example, by asking students to give oral reports before their papers were due in order to share what they had learned with their uninformed classmates -students took a more critical and time-consuming, "high-investment" approach to their research assignments. The range and quality of the writing contexts students are exposed to may be key factors in aiding their development as academic writers (Nelson & Hayes, 1988). If students work in writing situations that actively encourage them to share and interpret research material rather than expecting them to regurgitate it, they may learn to rely on the same "issue-driven" strategies and goals observed in the more experienced academic writers.

Your credit score report accommodates details about the place you're employed, stay and the way you pay your bills (On time or not). How to Write Articles Quickly

One of the best ways to promote your website or blog is through article marketing. Learning to write articles quickly is a skill you have to master to accomplish this.

Many website owners make article writing a lot more complicated than it has to be. When writing for websites, remember first of all that people online are scanning web pages, not reading every word, so there is no need to spend hours making every word perfect.

Your content isn’t going to be totally unique, no matter what you write about. Every topic you can think about has already been written about by someone else. Think about it – every newsworthy event is covered by CNN, NBC, ABC, etc. Every network and every newspaper are all covering the exact same event or topic, just in different words.

The fact is, there are no new topics. Your job is to take what’s already been written and improve on it by injecting your own comments and personality.

One way to do research quickly is by inputting the topic you want to write about into a search engine. Choose three or four matches and read these articles thoroughly, taking notes.

Or, other places for quick research include article directories, forums and yahoo answers. By reading what people are asking in yahoo answers, you will learn what information people are looking for.

Amazon.com provides some great tools for quick research. By choosing a few top-selling books on a given topic, you can research quickly by browsing a book’s table of contents, the back cover of the book and even an excerpt.

Once you have taken sufficient notes, it’s time to put your article together. Write an outline of the important points you want to make in your article. Then write the article without looking back at the other articles. This is nothing more than the same work you did in high school writing book reports. Most of us have written quite a few book reports in our lifetime, and in those days many of us put ourselves through the unnecessary stress of cutting it too close to deadlines. That means we already know how to write and research quickly!

Basically, we need to decide what we’re going to accomplish and when. If we intend to write an article a day, then we have to stay glued to our computer until we complete that task. If we want to get it done in half an hour or less, this is another goal to work toward. Practice will definitely lead to improvement.

Article marketing is one of the best forms of free advertising there is. Learning to write articles quickly is an easily learned skill that will help us get the most out of article marketing.

Writing Formal Reports

Writing a Formal Book Report?

In History our Teacher has assigned us a Formal Book Report. I chose the Book Benjamin Franklin An American Life as my book and what I was wondering is.. Do I just summarize the book or what? I haven't done a book report in a loong time.

No! You just don't write a simple summary.

Here are a few steps:

1) Take thorough and careful notes as you read the book. (See "How to Take Reading Notes.") Use Post-it flags to mark pages that contain important passages or quotes.

2) Gather your reading notes and the book and have them by your side as you write your report.

3) Ask yourself, What would I want to know about this book?

4) Look through your notes and decide, based on the length of the book report and your answers to the above question, what is essential to include and what can be excluded.

5) State the main point of the book: Why did the author write the book? Or for fiction, give a brief plot summary.

6) Outline the plot or main ideas in the book (See "How to Write a Paper Outline"), or for fiction describe the story and key dramatic points.

7) Follow your outline as you write the report, making sure to balance the general and the specific. A good book report will both give an overview of the book's significance and convey enough details to avoid abstraction.

8) Summarize the overall significance of the book: What has this book contributed to the knowledge of the world? For fiction: What does this story tell us about the author's take on life's big questions?

Scope Of Technical Writing

How To Make Money Writing Online Aside From Online Journalism

A decade ago, journalists were extremely anxious about the increasing preference of online publications instead of the print versions. The good thing is that they have learned to adapt with technological advancement which resulted into the expansion of the newsroom and the addition of the Online News Department. But besides true-blue journalism activities on the internet, what other opportunities are there regarding how to make money writing online?

If you love writing but do not have a journalism degree from a reputable university, do not worry. You still have a job waiting for you somewhere in the vast space of the World Wide Web. There are lots of online companies needing writers, not necessarily practicing journalists—not even journalism students. All they need are average reasonable people who can write about different interesting topics. It may be an advertisement for a company or an article to be submitted in an online directory. The possibilities are endless.

So, how does it work? Where can people find sites about how to make money writing online? Actually, with just a click of the search bar, any search engines will lead you to different places that are in need of writers.
HowToDoThings.com is a website which compiles online articles about a variety of topics. Pay a visit to the website and you will be amazed at the wide scope of the articles written by people like you. Sign up and start submitting articles, it’s free anyway. And someone might just be interested in your writing style. Digg.com operates pretty much the same way.

Offers will come eventually as you build on your professional writing portfolio. There are also people who are looking for writers who want to ghostwrite for them. This is the easier way of making money out of your writing ventures. Look for people who are building their products online and are in need of people to write about these products.

SEO writing is another thing. Although it is still a writing venture, Search Engine Optimization is actually more of a technical writing job. People who want to engage in this venture must know at least a bit about programming languages, meta tags, HTML, internet algorithms and web crawlers. There’s pretty much no way you can do SEO without knowing the purpose of meta tags or web crawlers.

A word of advice for writers who are just starting out their career in web writing: you must know the ins and outs of applying for an already established company and a smaller one. With a smaller company, you might be asked to perform a wide range of tasks. Make sure that you are flexible from the get-go even before getting yourself involved with the company. If you cannot adjust to other jobs descriptions in less than a week, then you might want to consider applying for a bigger company which prioritizes a specialization of operations.

Start using these things now and find the writing career you want. Soon, you will stop asking about how to make money writing online—because you are already the one helping others find a writing opportunity online.

writing a book report - please help!?

I have to do a book report about John Grisham's "The Firm" for my English course. I want to hand it in in written form instead of doing a presentation.
But how do I write it?? Just plot summary, characters, ... ?
Is it easier than I think it is?
Please help!!
Thanks! =)

A summary of the storyline then main characters. Then sum up as to why the book is worth buying/reading. Look on the net at reviews of other books to get a good idea as to how to put the report/review together. If you've time to go to the library, look at last weeks newspapers in which they review books. The Daily Mail do reviews on Fridays, I don't know when Telegraph/Times do them, they maybe on Sundays.
His novel...A Testament is just brilliant too.

MATHEMATICS LABORATORY IN SCHOOLS

MATHEMATICS LABORATORY IN SCHOOLS

It is a place where:

1)      Students do experiments with numbers and geometrical shapes and try to generalize these patterns.

2)    Students do most of their calculations with the help of scientific calculators.

3)    Students draw graphs of large number of functions with the help of scientific or graphic calculators and try to become familiar with graphs of all the functions they usually deal with.

4)    Students solve real life problems with real data because complex calculations are no longer a major consideration.

5)    Students express their answers to mathematics problems in decimal numbers and not in symbols and have a good idea about their magnitudes.

6)    Students get practice in estimating orders of magnitudes and obtaining approximate answers when exact answers are difficult to find.

7)    Students make charts and models to illustrate mathematical ideas.

8)    Students do almost all the work themselves, of course under the guidance of teachers, but the students are active all the time and are involved with what they are doing.

9)    The creativity of students is allowed free play.

10) Students solve graphically equations involving all types of functions.

11)  Students are free to discuss among themselves and with the teachers; in fact students and teachers form joint investigating teams.

12) Students find areas and volumes of both regular and irregular solids.

13) Students undertake projects both in mathematics and its applications.

14) The concepts and theorems are not given to the students; these arise naturally from their investigations.

15) Interfaces between algebra, geometry; probability; calculus etc are freely investigated and discussed.

16)  Attempts are made to interpret every symbolic solution.

17) The process of mathematics is emphasized much more than the product of mathematics.

18) Students are encouraged to find alternative solutions and alternative methods of solving problems.

19) Students enjoy learning mathematics.

Before we proceed further, let us explore as to why students do not fair well in mathematics. The reasons are not difficult to find.

It is not because:

i)                   Students are unable to solve certain problems,

ii)                Or, students are not able to memorize formulae etc.

But, it is due the fact that there are some inherent weaknesses in the teaching of present day mathematics. These are listed below:

1)      Mathematics is taught as an abstract subject.

2)    Mathematics education is far removed from applications.

3)    Mathematics is taught as an isolated subject.

4)    There is too much emphasis on symbols and their manipulations and relatively little on problem solving.

5)    Too much time is spent on routine monotonous drill type arithmetical calculations.

6)    The goal of mathematics education appears to be passing examinations in mathematics and not understanding mathematics and its applications or developing capacity to think mathematically.

7)    Instead of developing creativity, mathematics education encourages conformity to standard methods.

8)    It trains students to think that there should be only one method of solving mathematics problems.

9)    It trains students to think that there can be only one solution to a problem.

10) Mathematical proficiency is often confused with proficiency in making arithmetical calculations.

11)  The process by which mathematics is created is seldom taught or emphasized.

12) Mathematics is presented as a purely deductive science though it is also as much an experimental science as physics or biology.

13)  Geometric and Physical visualizations remain very weak.

14) Even geometric objects become just relations between symbols and are not curves or surfaces.

15)  It convinces the students that the only law which matters is the linear law.

16)  Students develop no idea of the order of magnitude of the results they get.

17)  Students are passive learners.

18)  Students do not talk mathematics, discuss mathematics or think mathematics.

19)  Mathematics is taught as a collection of topics.

20)                       The historical development of mathematics is never emphasized.

Thus the objective of a mathematics laboratory is to:

a)     Remove the weaknesses of present day mathematics education which the mathematics laboratory and the mathematics laboratory alone can do it.

b)    To develop the much needed confidence in students.

c)     To generate interest in the subject.

d)     To make the students divergent thinkers.

Having seen “WHAT” and “WHY” of a mathematics laboratory let us now discuss the “HOW” of it.

Time-table Re-scheduling:

While preparing class-wise time-table, in JNVs, the provision for mathematics practical periods may be made in the following manner:

From classes VI to X, there is a provision of one theory period of mathematics in each class in every day working time-table. Also in each class two periods for “ART” are allotted per week. It is suggested that one theory period of mathematics may be combined with one period of art and the combined periods may be re-named as “MATHEMATICS PRACTICAL PERIODS”. This way in five days each class will have an opportunity to visit the laboratory. As regards classes XI and XII are concerned, the students normally opt either mathematics or biology. The students opting mathematics can be taken to the laboratory during the practical periods for biology.

Layout of a mathematics laboratory:

The ideal mathematics laboratory will have the following sections:

1)      Section for job discussion and planning the solution.

2)    Section for making sketches, drawings for taking observations.

3)    Section for reporting the results.

4)    Section for making the working models as per job specifications.

5)    Computer section for doing experiments of mathematics on computers.

The above sections (steps to be performed by students) need be discussed by the teacher in-charge, in the laboratory. Before the children are asked for execution, the teacher should explain the planning part as well as he/she should help them in identifying the appropriate solution in respect of choice of proper tools and their use in execution. The teacher should also explain the use of computers in finding the solution and the method of checking the accuracy of the solution already found in the laboratory.

Furnishing Mathematics Laboratory:

Sufficient furniture should be provided in the laboratory to do experiments and at the same time for displaying the working models and other means of taking observations; to carry out experiments and make a clear understanding about the use of procedural tools in engineering projects.  These models are made out of discarded toys and waste articles found around us. This approach boosts the creativity, scientific development of the brain of the children, and satisfies their zeal to do something new and unique.

Raw Materials:

To enable the students to work in a mathematics laboratory, there should be a few cupboards to store raw materials, which can be issued to the students when they come to the lab for doing practical work. The list of some of the essential raw materials is as under:

I)                 Circular discs: Plates of different diameters may be cut on thermo Cole sheets or may be plastic metal discs purchased from the market to determine the value of ? or such other experiments.

II)            There should be square/rectangular plates cut from thermo Cole sheets, different solids like cone, cylinder for drawing different shapes and making observations for various computations.

III)        A thick card sheet, capable of folding, to prepare packing boxes, envelops etc or other small objects.

IV)            The students will be required to use drawing sheets, graph papers, cutting tools, thread, small balls made of different materials, ready reckoners, rubric cube, calculators etc.

Measuring Equipment:

1)      Measuring tapes 30m; 10m; 2m; 1m and smaller lengths, arrows (iron wire nails 20 to 30 cm long; 2.5 mm in diameter)- they act as pegs to mark points on the field ; pipe hole 1m long ; 10 mm in diameter, pointed at one end; painted with red and white strips- used for making solar observations and determination of N-S direction at a place and also finding out the angle of elevation of the Sun at any time.

2)    Plain mirror, plum bob suspended from a hook, drawing board , mini drafter, vernier calipers , working models to verify law of parallelogram of forces, triangle of forces etc.

Display models:

1)      Children are assigned task to imagine suitable design data to prepare models and keep them for display in the lab. This includes different types of packing boxes; tents-pyramid shaped; circular and dome shaped etc.

2)    Storing typical shaped tin cans or paper packets like a tetrahedron; prism; cylindrical shaped which are available in the market for packing milk or juice. The children are assigned task to imagine suitable design data to prepare attractive packets for liquid contents.

3)    Certain models are prepared to demonstrate the principles used in making some scientific instruments, e.g. optical square; cross staff; periscope; kaleidoscope etc. The students thus come to know the use of such scientific equipments.

Working Models:

1)      Plane co-ordinatograph: It is a model prepared in the lab and used for making observations of co-ordinates of various points in a plane. This is of great help to explain the basic concepts of co-ordinate geometry in two dimensions. Students are asked to take observations of points and write equations of incident ray; reflected ray; equations of circles; parabola; plane; straight lines; tangent lengths etc on the basis of co-ordinates observed on the working model. The students can understand the transformation of one system of co-ordinates into the other, trigonometric ratios and their applications etc.

2)    Plane Space Co-ordinatograph: It is a model prepared in the lab and used for making observations of co-ordinates of various points in the space above the surface. This is of great help to explain the basic concepts of co-ordinate geometry in three dimensions. Students are asked to take observations of points in space; write equations of straight lines in space and locate points in space. The students can understand the transformation of one system of co-ordinates into the other. With such experiments, children come to know how to determine the distances of cloud; sun; moon; space craft at the time of Arial photography etc.

3)    Dip Measurement Model: It is a model made out of transparent plastic cylinder to represent railway tanker. This demonstrates how easily the liquid contents or the volume can be determined in case of cylindrical tanker making few observations.

4)    Water analog model: It is a model to take observations for filling the pool by different taps having different rates of discharge. Such observations enable the students to formulate quadratic equations and find out their solutions. Such working models analogy can be applied in solving different types of problems related to the formation of quadratic equations on the basis of given conditions. Also the observations may be used to tackle problems based on dispersion theory and determination of the most probable value in a set of observations.

5)    Model To Make Observations of Time Periods: A pendulum is suspended in the lab and time period for the oscillations are observed. This leads to the value of g, the acceleration due to gravity.

6)    Equilibrium Forces Analog Model: This model is used to formulate the equations of equilibrium.

The Concept:

On the lines of science laboratory, the concept of mathematics laboratory may be visualized and developed. It is a place where every one should get an opportunity to establish correlation of one subject with allied subjects.

The basic linear equation answering the needs of mathematics laboratory is:

Ml = aiXi + bi Ym + ciZo ; where:

Ml denotes activities in mathematics laboratory.

Xi denotes necessary infra structure.

The coefficients are:

a1 denotes library and reference books.

a2 denotes furniture layout.

a3 denotes laboratory equipment- Computers; Calculators; Geometry Box; Cutting Tools; Letter-Stencils; Drawing Equipment; Mathematical Charts; Logarithm tables etc.

Ym denotes necessary mode of working and management tools.

The coefficients are:

b1 denotes Computations leading to desirable outputs.

b2 denotes Making drawings and sketches to explain the procedure.

b3 denotes Analysis and decision from set of observations.

b4 denotes Field layout and model making to achieve the objectives.

Zo denotes the number of objectives associated with the activity.

For example: an activity for determining the nature of ? may have the following objectives:

c1 denotes : What is ??

c2 denotes: What is the value of ??

c3 denotes : Whether ? is rational or irrational?

Now finally I suggest some activities which can be done in the mathematics laboratory:

1)      Mathematics laboratory- Definition.

2)    Activity 1: Mathematics laboratory- Introduction.

3)    Activity 2: Half Life.

4)    Activity 3: One-Less.

5)    Activity 4: Doubling.

6)    Activity 5: Span.

7)    Activity 6: Roller.

8)    Activity 7: Center-Point.

9)    Activity 8: Bigger.

10)  Activity 9: Equals.

11)  Activity 10: Side by Side.

12)  Activity 11: Paper art.

13)  Activity 12: Cut Away

14)  Activity 13: Impossible Challenge.

15)  Activity 14: Get triangle equal in area to a parallelogram.

16)  Activities 15, 16: Quick Calculations.

This is not the exhaustive list of activities to be performed in the laboratory. Many more activities may be thought of and performed in the laboratory.

The details of the above mentioned activities are available in the accompanying CD. These can be viewed using Microsoft Power Point and clicking to view slide show.
